Network Security

I'm pretty new to the industry. I currently work as an HD analyst but am looking to learn more and broaden my horizons 🙂 . I want to learn as much as I can, but not sure where to really start so I figured I would start here.

Could someone provide a list of sites that you favor dealing with network security, particularly firewall, proxy, and malware?

What certs do you really needs and which ones could you go without?

Any advice you guys could drop on rookie would be very well appreciated.

My eventual goal is to become a consultant and help businesses develop networks based on their needs. I know it's shooting a bit high but hell, why not?

I have no certs, or degrees. Not needed (for my company anyway) in the Industry. Experience is the key imho.

Understand, that you can learn some of everything, but if you truely want to be a "network admin" then you won't have much brain room left for server/workstation stuff.

I'm a jack of all trades. I have decent network experience (imho anyway), decent workstation, I know a decent amount of AD, Exchange, lots of Linux and it's services.

for network, start cramming the OSI and learn where everything fits. It's a fundemental you require imho

The book Building Internet Firewalls is a great place to start learning about network security and firewalls; it got me started many years ago. As for certifications, you might want to consider a CCNA. It is not security-focused, but you really need to understand networking before you can fully understand network security.
