i know that a network printer can be set up easily, but can a scanner be used on a lan? my father has an hp
all-in-1 unit (copier, printer, scanner) and i want to be able to scan something from the scanner directly to my computer over our network. can this be done?

would i have to to that? right now we have 3 computers in the lan. the scanner is connected to my fathers computer (serial port i believe). how would i give the scanner it's own ip address? is there a way to "share" the scanner like you can "share" a printer?

Hmmm... Remote control of a scanner.... How are you going to load it? Seems to me that to use a scanner you have to be standing in front of it and your dads computer must be on. So why not scan from your dads machine and save to yours. This is where USB should work nice. Install the drivers on both systems, then hot swap the scanner to were you need it.
