Network problem between two win2k systems

I have updated my desktop and labtop to win2k. I am using network card and crossover cable to connect them directly. It seems to me that the network setting in win2k is really easy all I need to do is to share the fold and then I can see each other and access each other. I set both of them belong to one group.

One day I took my labtop to my office and connect it to the network of my company. All I did is to change the group name to the group name which the computer in my office belongs to. and then I can see each other and access to each other.

When I came back I switch the work group back to my old group and connect to my desktop at home. I can see both of them from my desktop, and when I try to access my labtop I was told that the network path is not found. I can not see any of them from my labtop. I can only see the righ group name in my labtop, but when I click it I was told the servers listed in this group are not available or something like it.

I have thought whether it is because my network card is damaged. But I can see both of them from one computer, which means they should be fine. I also take the labtop back to my office and connect to the network. It works fine I still can see other computers in our company and access them.

So what maybe wrong here? One thing is I changed user name when I take labtop back by a mistake. But I have changed all of them back to the original name.

Sign, I have spent two days on it, and now I really don't know what I should do next.

Thanks,

dodo

Can you ping the desktop from the laptop and vice versa? Check to see if your subnet masks are the same (typically 255.255.255.0). If they aren't, you won't be able to see the other computer even with the same workgroup name.

Also, if you reboot your desktop, does the laptop still show up in the network? I'm wondering if you keep your desktop on 24/7. If you do, your desktop might not have detected that your laptop was disconnected from the network. That might be why you can see your laptop from your desktop, but get errors when trying to get into your laptop.

Reboot the desktop PC, make sure that your login id on the laptop w/ permission that win2kpro original assigned for.
