Network printers and spooling

Here is a quick description of my network setup...

I have 2 systems (1-win98se & 1-winme) with different IP's attached to my IDSL router that has a 10t 4-port built in hub. The printer, a Lexmark Z12, is attached to one of the systems, mine, and shared. I am able to share everyting and LAN games work flawlessly.

Everything work fine until I try to print numerous copies form the client system, the printer spools the entire document before it starts to print. Now this wouldn't be that much of an issue except that the data coming over from the client is very slow. I checked all the settings in the printer properties and it is set to "start printing after the first page is spooled" but it still doesn't work.

Any Ideas

I would choose "Start Printing Immediatly" instead of that option in the printer properties section.

it doesn't have that choice. they are "start printing after last page is spooled" which is what it is doing and "start printing after first page is spooled", which is what i want it to do.

Did you check for driver updates to your printer off Lexmarks page? If so, then that printer might not support what you are trying to do. It would suprise me though.

yeah I have the latest drivers. this printer only cost 60 bucks and doesn't have any memory in it. but if the printer doesn't have it's own memory i thought it was supposed to use system memory.

That might be your problem right there.

We tried networking a HP Deskjet printer at work one time, and it would print fine and then it would just lock up and the print jobs wouldn't go. It was then that I decided it would be best to go with a solution that would work flawlessly. We then purchased a HP 2000c and it worked great. No stopping problems.

Generally, cheap printers were not meant to be attached and operated from a network.

Is there a significant different? I thought that using "Start printing after last page is spooled" makes the most sense. That's what I use. Should I be using that?

I have always chosen that option, but mostly the printer has that set as the default.

I have never tried the Spooling option before....don't know which one is better to be honest with you.
