Network printer

Just spent three days babysitting my grandkids and I need some adult conversation! LOLOL

A month ago I bought a HP Photosmart printer that is wifi, usb and network capable.

I did a quick install and set it up as a usb and wifi printer. Direct connect from my desktop to the printer via the usb and wifi using my router/modem as the access or relay point (not sure what to call it)
I use my laptop 90% of the time and send documents to the printer via the wifi.

Would it be better to use a port on the router/modem to the printer and make the printer a network printer?

Looking for reliability more then speed as the printer is on the second floor of my house and I am slow going up steps! LOL

The ethernet connection is always preferred. That is an absolute rule mitigated only by the relative inconvenience of getting wire to the machine when compared to wireless.

Wire connection to the Router, and set to static IP.

Finally read over the manual for the printer.
I will switch to the wired connection.
First I will turn off the wifi on the printer.

Next I have two choices.
First,,, use the install disk that came with the printer to set up a network connection.

Second,, as Jack MDS suggested set a static IP.

How do I set a static IP? Is the IP assigned to the printer?
I need whatever help or info that can be passed on.

Once the static ip is assigned,, do I have to set up each pc that will use the network printer to look for or use that new static ip?

You can set a static IP via Hp's install software when you load the printer driver via network setup on the disk or you can set one using the front pannel LCD on the printer by going through the menu's. It's prolly easier just to use the install disk.
