Hi,

Thanx for looking in.

I can fix single computers by sleight of hand, but networking, I haven't got a clue ;-)

Problem:

I've acquired a middle-aged laptop with no operating system or cdrom. [Has got a fdd].
The desktop is running Win2k pro.
Have acquired a cheapy hub.

Now, when I connect from desktop to hub, the hub shows that there is action.
The connection from the laptop [running DOS at the moment] to the hub shows nothing - no lights.

Either, how do I get the network card in the laptop to work [PCMCIA] so that I can copy over Win 98 operating sys from desktop, or is there another way to get the operating sys on to the laptop. Does the PCMCIA slot work out of Windoze?
The laptop is a Toshiba Portege 3110CT 233mhz.

Help is appreciated.
Thank you.

you have several options -

1) remove hard drive from laptop. get 2.5 --> 3.5 adapter and put in a desktop/tower pc and copy files over that way.

2) use null modem cable (serial) and interlink and direct cable connection to connect laptop and desktop
link with help

3) use a network enabled boot disk (bootdisk.com and nu2.nu make sure that bootdisk loads socket services (drivers to enable PCMCIA controller/slot).

You could also put the win98 folder and files on another drive or partition on the win2k machine, and use a network ghost floppy.

The fastest and safest way will be to find an old External Parallel Port ZIP drive (they can be found around for $20), and it comes with a simple driver program that can run it on DOS. Attach it to the computer with the CD drive install the drivers, and Copy the Win98 OS from the CD to Zip Disks (I thing you need two).

Attach the drive to the DOS computer and copy Win98 OS files to the to the Hard drive and install Win98.

The whole thing should cost $20-$30 and should take less than 30min. to transfer the files.
