Network MPEG2 encoding

I heard from a friend that encoding MPEG2 movies via a network was very fast, and most of all possible, something I never expected.

Is this true? And if it is, with what program can I do that?

What exactly do you mean encoding via a network? I don't see how it could be any faster since the lower bandwidth of the network would probably be more of a bottleneck than doing it all on one system.

Nope, I'm talking about PC1 having the movie, and PC1 through PC10 all simultanously encoding little bits and chunks of it, speeding up the process.

so you're talking about distributed encoding...

I guess if you have the resources. Chances are by the time you get the thing setup and working right you could have encoded the entire history of film on a single P4 or A64.

I know Beowulf, and it's Linux based. He said that it was just a Windows application. Anyone know what it could be?

I know Vegas allows distributed rendering, but I don't know if it will specifically render MPEG2. It's a lead for you to check out though.
