Heyas im currently doing a 2yr network engineering diploma but id like to learn some stuff myself ahead of time so im ontop of the class

anyone suggest some REALLY good rescources i can look over and study off? nitty things that might be over looked in the course...but are helpfull when networking...im a knowledge spunge..that cant spell...gimme gimme gimme =P thanks guys

oh andi read somewhere how to make your own router out of an old 486 box and a floppy? anyone gimme some more info?

Do you have any work experience or anything yet? If not it might be a good way to try to get your foot in the door somewhere which can be an excellent educational experience as well.
 
i live in australia and the area where i live isnt huge on IT...so getting IT work here is crazy hard, im like 1 1/2 hrs from sydney on train thats where most IT work is..which im unable to do due to studying 5days a week and it being so far away

not a good start 🙂 dont find problems in your situation find solutions to them 🙂

As for making a 486 into a router for learning purposes it will be best to put a full nix distro on it. maybe redhat or mandrake. just dont intall any of the gui or Xwindows stuff. learning networking sites hmm er you could try www.howtosubnet.com very important 🙂

if you get nix on that old box then there is a wealth of information floating around the net in the form of how-to's that will teach you all you need to know. best way to learn is get stuck in 🙂
