I had a friend call me up and say he's having problems with his network.

Seems when he's browsing the network via Windows Explorer, it's really slow.

But, he says it's pretty fast/responsive when doing it through a "cmd" dos window.

There's 3 computers connected, Win98, and 2 Win XP Pro boxes.

He just got satellite internet, and the problem started then. He previously just had a hub, and it was very fast/responsive, but as soon as he switched to a wireless router/switch in order to share the satellite internet, it started to act very slow.

I thought it might be static ips, but he says he turned that off once he got the new wireless router/switch.

Any ideas?

A lot of variables here, cable, bad switch?, malware, etc. Does this happen only when browsing a certain computer or the entire network in general?

Has he tried browsing the folder by using the FQDN? eg. start, run, \\computername or IP

All of those seem likely, but the weird thing is it was working well before the satellite internet, and all he had then was just a hub.

I think he has mapped drives.

I'm thinking it might be the switch, and I'm going to upgrade the firmware first thing.

I'll know more tomorrow when I get there.

Thanks!
