Network/internet connectivity question..

I currently have a router with a single port that runs into a wireless access point. If i were to plug the router into a swtich and the access point into the switch, would each computer connecting to the access point be able to connect to the internet seperately? Or do i need a router with multiple ports?

You should be able to plug a hub or switch into the router, then plug the router into the WAP.

The switch doesn't plug into the AP. Read the above post again.

Switch ----> Router ----> AP

The switch needs an uplink port to go to the router, but I've never seen a switch without one. If it *really* doesn't have one, you can connect them via a crossover cable in a regular port.

I'm not use to switches with the combo port.. its been a while since ive looked at a switch..

Are you trying to attach more than 1 wireless device? Or are you asking how to share the connection with wired devices plugged into the SWITCH?

I'm assuming the latter...in which you would plug the router into the uplink port of the switch, then plug the WAP into any of the other ports on the switch. Simply plug any other devices into the switch to get internet access.

If you're asking about how to get more than 1 wireless device on it, you don't need a switch. Just set up the wireless devices right to get the signal.

Right now about 5 computers are using wireless connections. Im looking to add a cabled portion to the network with a swtich.

The router is an old standalone piece with only one port. I was debating on either getting a newer multiport router or adding a swtch.

Ah. You're just confusing me with your descriptions of what you had plugged into what before! 🙂

You want:

WAP ----> Switch ----> Router ----> DSL/Cable modem

And then other systems can be plugged into the switch as well. You don't need a multiport router -- it just basically does the same thing as this setup would.
