Network in win3.1

Moving Target

Senior member
Is it possiable? Need to at work, have 4 computers networked together running Win 98SE, but need to keep 3.1 on an old system that is hooked up to a old CNC. It's an old 486/50 but it is the only comp I can get to work on that CNC. We only use it to transfer programs through the serial port to the CNC.

If it is poss, how hard is it. And I don't seem to have any Win3.1 disks, wich may also be a problem.

Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Microsoft made a product called windows for workgroups. Which was basically win 3.1 with networking built on top of it. That might be one option. What exactly do you need to do, because there are many networking things that will work in DOS. Type net from a dos prompt and you will see what I mean. What version of dos is it?

I have Win Ver 3.1 and not sure what ver of dos. I have the nic installed (I think). If I type net in dos prompt I get invalid file name or type. All we need to do is do file sharing.

Any Ideas as to how to I get a copy of this "windows for workgroups"?

to find dos version type ver at a dos prompt.

Look around on the net. I'm sure someone will sell you the software. Many people call it WFW and officially I think it is version 3.11 of windows.

If you dont have at least dos ver 5 then buy an upgrade for that also. Dos 5 and later are light years ahead of earlier versions.
