i just built new computer and i was wondering how to network them so i can copy files from one come to the other....i have a d-link router. can someone send me a link? 1 comp has windows xp home and the new one has windows xp pro
 
Most routers are also have a built in switch - so if your pcs have network cards - all you need are two network cables also called RJ-45 or patch cables to hook them to the router. You will need to locate the router manual (go online if not handy) and also take a look at Jack MDS's site www.ezlan.net for help in configuring the newtwork.

For starters, it is helpful to have the Netbuei protocol (in addition to TCP/IP) installed see

Do NOT use XP's network configuration wizard - do the configuring manually - its not difficult.
 
I am quite n00b to networking too.
Do I really need Netbeui to have one PC recognize another PC both running XP and connected to the same router?

I was wondering could anyone post an easy step by step on how to get 2 PC to recognize each other when connected to the same router. Or link to such guide.. I do not quite want to learn networking as such but googling puts me back to school...
I just want to connect two PC together using a router.
I have got for my DSL connection. I guess that's the same what lodmdma wanted to do...
 
1. If you router is secure, enable sharing on the drives you want to share over the network. I would recommend making a folder specifically for this purpose since you don't need to share your whole hard drive with everything on it. You can do this from the properties menu of a folder/drive under the "sharing" tab.

2. Connect each computer to the router; if it has multiple ports then it?s probably a switch too. You will need Cat5 or above cable with RJ45 ends.

3. Find out the computer names, this is what each computer is called on the network.

4. Go to "my computer" and in the text field at the top, type in "//computer name here/" without the "" and replace it with the destination computer name. This is the easiest most direct way to the computer you wish to intend to share. "My Network Places" or "Workgroup" windows are worthless as windows has a "hit and miss" timing on when the computers are available on this level.
