Does anyone know of a cheap Network accessable (stand alone) Hard Drive solution? I'd like to setup a hard drive on my network (not inside any 1 system) to act as a file server/backup solution.

Something like this . Only a bit cheaper (closer to $350 CDN).

have you checked out the maxtor maxattach line? i don't know how much they cost, but they seemed to be somewhat value-oriented.

That stuff has never moved to the consumer space, hence it costs big $$$. It's cheaper to pickup a lowend system to use as a server (and 700MHz is lowend these days)

Thanks for the suggestion, but just had a quick look and their 3000 series says "$1,595 for 40 GB, $1,995 for 80 GB, and
$2,495 for 120GB"

The one from Promise that I linked to in the first post is $600 without drives (IDE RAID say 2 40GB is roungly $300...bring the total to ~$900).

You're probably looking for something like this or this. The Maxtor model runs around USD$900 for the 80-gig model. The Quantum about $500 for 40GB, $750 for 80GB.

Your best bet would be to throw an old PC on your network and attach whatever size disk you need.

The Quantum Snap servers are looking the closest so far.

Keep the ideas coming guys.

Thanks,

The NETGEAR ones on that page don't seem too bad. I'll have to find more info on them.
