Network Gurus please help

I'm working on a friends computer that is having network problems. It seemed to have trouble finding an IP address, so I disabled Automatic Private Addressing in the registry. Now I can't get it to find an IP address. I've tried IPCONFIG /release /renew and it doesn't work. Anyone have any ideas I can try?? Thanks.

I'm connecting through a Roadrunner cable modem. My computer works fine with the modem, it gets an IP address just fine from DHCP. My friends computer does have DHCP enabled, but it says Invalid IP detected, and it gives 0.0.0.0.

remove the nic from hardware manager
and re add it
also remove tcp/ip and re add it

I removed the NIC from device manager and it reinstalled automatically etc.
For some reason the uninstall option is not available for TCP/IP...it is for QoS, Client for Microsoft Networks, etc.

you disconnect your computer and connect this to the cable modem?
if that's the case then write down the IP you get when you connect your computer to the modem, set up a static IP on his computer of the SAME IP and see if you can ping the gateway (set proper DNS's if you want surf).
