Network diagram/mapping tools

I know most people use Visio to create network maps, but I was wondering if anyone had a free tool to recommend. I've never mapped out a network from scratch before, and was hoping someone here had some sagely advice to give.

Just so long as you keep from posting links to porn in my thread you can kid around...

I would be interested in one too. I have a lot of stuff on my network and I would like to map it for trouble shooting.

Visio for creating network images. If you want a dynamic network map, products like WhatsUp Gold or InterMapper work good.

There are others, but they are more of an entire network management suite with collection stations, polling, and thousands of dollars...

Just want something to make an image with that shows a general layout of my network like people are doing with visio.

I do not think that you would find a Free application that can scan and read the Network system and draw automatically a Diagram.

There are free applications that can scan the whole Network and provide full information on the screen and be saved Text and html and XML.

Like this, http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner

After running it you can hand draw the Network and add the information by using this free Drawing program, http://www.weresc.com/network.php

Ohh, I think I was mistaking then. Visio scans your network then puts it in a image? I can draw the network but I like the icons that people using Visio have in their maps.

iirc, visio can't scan/map network, but it can connect to AD and map your AD schema. That might have been another product, or an older version of Visio iirc (like right before MS took it over)

Visio Enterprise used to be able to do network maps -- that was its original awesome feature -- but then it magically stopped in Visio XP? I think it was there in Visio 2000. Not sure though.

I have heard that WERESC's diagrammer doesn't suck as much as one would imagine. I've never used it though, I'm a Visio-lover.

If you have access to a manual phalange-operated scribe utility, you could map your network on timber-based parchment. This is very cost-effective, and you can also customize your images to your hearts content, only being limited to your creativity and motor coordination.
