Network Connection

I plugged in my network cable to my dell, and i can see the 1394 connection working fine in the network places, but i cant connect to the net.

I know its probably something simple, but i just cant get it to work.

There could be many reasons ... first tell us where is this network cable coming from? Cable or DSL box? LAN? From Work? ... Is there a green light when you connect the network cable into your PC ethernet port? ... you might also want to open up Explorer and click on "Tools" select Internet Options, click on Connection tab and then click on LAN settings; make sure the Automatic Detect Settings box is checked ....
 
the cable is coming from my router from my cable modem. The light is green and the settings are set for auto detect.

The connection works, b/c my xbox works fine.
 
Cable Box to a router ... depending on what kind of brand router you are using, there are a couple ways of configurating them ... type in http://192.168.0.1 in your browser and type in the user name and password (default sn:admin password: password) ... change your settings from there ... or download the router's manual from the manufactuer's website ... i have a Netgear wireless router at home .. i had to change the settings before it worked ...
 
here is the update

I got my xbox and my computer upstairs hooked up to the router in ports 2 & 3 on the router. I have my downstairs computer in port 4.

The xbox and upstairs comp work fine, but the downstairs one wont. I changed the ports and port 4 works fine. I even tried port 1, keeping it open b/c its the uplink port, and it works fine.

In my network places on the down stairs comp, i see the connection enabled but its not letting me get to the net. Am i missing something that i need to install????
 
If you take the downstairs PC upstairs and hoook it up does it work? I had this situation last week as follows....

Friend has cable modem and a router. Upstairs PC is right next to router, downstairs PC is at complete opposite end of house so there's a very long cable involved....

BOth PCs worked fine.

He replaced the downstairs PC with a new Dell that had a built in Network jack. This network jack would not let him on the network. Kept saying the cable was unplugged. Took this PC upstairs and plugged in right by the router and it worked fine.

Problem was that the built in network card wasn't powerful enough to handle the distance.

We took the NIC out of the computer he was replacing and put it in the new Dell and it worked fine.

Summary, try a different NIC. heh.
 
i dotn see it enabled i was under the impression the 1394 connection was the network. Learn something new everyday.

The PC with the problem is right next to the router. I took the direct cable out of my modem and plugged it into the PC and i saw the yellow status light lite up. But it still said i wasnt connected to the internet. By saying "it" i mean the setup disk for my router.


I look at the network places on the good PC, which i built myself thank you 🙂 , i got all the XP Pro self installed icons. I got them from running the network wizard or something. I create a setup disk at the end, and it doesnt work on the problem PC.

Maybe its the cable? Hmmm, i didnt even try that yet. Knowing my luck, its not that easy.

 
Make sure you do NOT have a IP address manually set in the TCP/IP box under your Network Cards property. The setting SHOULD be "Obtain a IP address automatically". If the IP address is manually set both you router AND cable modem will not work when connected to that computer.

To check if the IP address is being assigned automatically right click on My Network Places, Then highlight Local Area Connections and right click on it and select properties. Scroll down to the bottom of the scroll box and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on properties. On the General tab there should be a dot next to Assign IP address automatically. If it is not then click next to it and close the windows (clicking OK on each window) and get back to the Network Connections window. Right click on the Local Area Connection and select repair. It should then seek out a IP address from either your router or cable modem (whichever is connected directly at the time). You may need to reboot for the IP address to be assing if it doesn't happen with the repair command.

Sometimes you need to reboot the router when you add a PC, so it can assign an IP to each connection. Just power it down and power it up, that should do it.
 
everything is set to auto.

i powered down the router and still nothing. The lights are lit on the router for the port the computer is connected to.
 
The "1394" connection is your Firewire port. Is there a "LAN" or "Local Area Network" or "TCP/IP" connection listed as well (and listed as "Active")? If not, then you somehow don't have your NIC properly installed and configured. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the network card's drivers, then run the Windows Networking Setup Wizard thing. 🙂
 
You should be able to. Just go into Device Manager and delete the entry for the NIC (say "Yes" when it warns you about removing a system device). When you reboot, it should detect it again and reinstall the drivers (or you can run the Add New Hardware wizard).

Is this a new computer? Did the network *ever* work? If they shipped it to you brand new like this, there could be a hardware problem with the motherboard.

Its a new computer. It worked fine in my brothers dorm room at college a month ago. He brought it home b/c it had some issues the the HD and i took care of it for him through Dell. Now its home, and i cant get it to work with my cable modem.

No crossover cable.
