Hi,
My laptop using wireless detects the network and connects to it but doesn't transfer anything, ie can't go to any sites. I can use my desktop to connect directly to the modem and that works fine, but if I connect by line through the router the internet doesn't work.

Any ideas to what may be the problem? Thanks.

Hi,

It sounds like you can connect to the router, but the router isn't connected to the outside world - is that it?

If so, check settings - make sure your username/password is typed in correctly, also PPPoA or PPPoE is chosen (whether you are on DSL or ADSL), and VCI/MUX settings are correct.

Also - just to make sure of this - are you connecting the modem to the router?
Or is the router also a modem?

Can you post the model nos of router and modem.

I know that most Bellsouth DSL modems have a router built-in. So you should configure your wireless router as an access point( don't use its routing functionality). Try this, connect your desktop directly to the DSL modem, and make sure that you can get to the Internet. Goto Start -> Run -> type cmd. In the command window(old DOS-style looking window), type ipconfig and press ENTER. If the IP Address is 192.168.X.XXX, then your DSL modem also has router function built-in. Also make a note of the default gateway. If this is the case, then make sure that your wireless router has a different IP address than the DSL modem's router. The DSL modem's router IP address is also the default gateway. Consult with the manual of your wireless router for instructions on how to find out/change IP address. Next, get a straight through ethernet cable(male-male) and use it to connect from the DSL modem to one of the four switch ports of the wireless router( NOT the WAN port). This by-passes the router function of the wireless router and turn it into an access point. Finally, setup wireless security(consult your manual).
