ok here goes. i have 2 computers networked at home. i am using a netgear RT314 router. and both have Linksys NC100 Fast Ethernet 10/100 NICs. i recently did a format and reinstall of WIN 98 se, on one of them. the last thing i have to install is the network card. everytime i install the NIC. it shows up in network properties, the network is up and running, everything looks fine, but it doesnt show up in winipcfg. so no internet access. i have tried using different NICs ( 3 in all) and none work. all 3 NICs work fine on my main rig though. so i dont think its the NICs. i have tried tech support from Cox cable and Linksys and no one knows whats up. any ideas ??????

thanks.

cheese out.

You need to post information about the network confiruation, what protocols are installed, did you assign an IP address? Are you shareing the internec connection via ICS or a router? Before anyone can help you will need to provide more info.

Opps, just noted that you are using a router, compare the network configs between the 2 systems, make them the same except for the IP address.

all settings are the same , i have checked to many tiems to count. it was working before the reinstal of windows.
i am using cox cable for isp, using DHCP . ip address are obtained automatically.

thanks.

might be a good excuss to go ahead and start building a new system 🙂

I am running Win98SE on a 4 system network, all talking to a SMC Barricade router to the new ATTBI cable system. I have never looked at winipcfg, so have no idea what it has to do with your ability to share the Internet, sorry I can't help you there.

What does device manager show for your NICs?
What network protocols do you have attatched to the NIC?

I install, Netbuie, make it default on all systems.
attatch TCP/IP protocol and because I play old network games IPX to the NIC as well
enable file shareing, then go to TCP/IP and IPX bindings and disable file shareing. So only netbuie does file sharing and printer stuff.

Since I dislike passwords I set Windows logon as the client and do not enter a password.

I also assign fixed IP addresses to each NIC and have read the DNS server numbers off of my router and entered those into the properties of each card.

Hope this helps.

This sounds like what's happening to me.

I have both win2k & win98 on one pc.
I can access the internet with win2k fine.
But not with win98.

I reinstalled the NIC drivers over and over but all that shows up when I run winipcfg is 2 'PPP adapter' entries. no sign of my nic.
I had this problem long ago, and fixed it, but do not recall what the heck I did.

if you resolve this, please let us know what you did. I'll do the same. gluck.

I had this problem too. I'm also having difficulty remembering how I solved it. Possibly I removed networking from the system altogether and added it back. Have you tried that? Use Add/Remove programs, but click the tab for Windows components or whatever, and yank all networking from the computer.

Then reboot. When it finds the card, it will install the networking system files again, and hopefully work.
