Network card slows down boot up

I determined that my network card is really slowing down the boot up time. I mean its gets into the desktop plenty fast. But then it just sits there. I know this because I cannont access computer properties or control panel and my Norton Anti Virus is diabled. This happens for about 30 seconds then the hard drive picks up. NAV is enabled and everything is accessible.

I tried disabling my network card (LinkSys Etherfast 10/100) in the device manager and restarted. Boot up is the same. But this time there is no more pause in the desktop. NAV is instantly enabled and such.

How do i fix this?

I remember reading somewhere that the network card is just looking for an IP address. And if I assign it one this just fix the "pause" But I have forgotten how to do this in Windows XP.

In Windows XP is like this:
Start->Network connections

Local area connection
Properties
Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click Properties

When at "Obtain an IP address automatically", select "use the following address"
You can safely use one of the "faked" IP addresses (those are not real IP addresses - no one on
Internet have them, nor will you):
IP address: 192.168.1.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

Doing so, the network card will be unable to get Internet.

If you want more help, give us details - Internet access is on network card or no,
you have a network who is only local and so on.

MESSING WITH IP ADDRESSES IS NOT A GOOD THING TO DO, UNLESS YOU KNOW WELL
WHAT ARE YOU DOING

I believe the linksys router is using the 192.168.1.1 ip address, so that one you will not be able to use, but it should be relatively simple, just go through the first few steps of calins post, use a different IP adress though, the subnet mask is correct, for the gateway tab you will need to input the ip address of the router, and for the DNS tab you will need to put in the DNS information from your router (just check what the router has, write it down and input it.) hope this helps!

My parent's WinXP box and my Win98 box have this same 'problem'. You learn to get used to it, though. Tweaking around networking settings is not my forte, so I just live with it.

The suggestion given regarding setting up an IP address are accurate, but I use 192.168.1.10, as recommended by DSLReports.com. (I know you guys have that Seti competition going, so I'm not taking sides, I'm just advising on where i found the info.

You also want to make sure WINS is off, if you don't need it.

LASTLY, go do a search for Boot Log Analyzer. I found a site for it a few dayds ago, but I don't remember, so just do a search in Google. The author's webpage doesn't seem to make the file readily accessible, so just look for a 3rd party site. It's shareware, so it shouldn't be hard to find. Just extract the file and run it. There is no official setup or install.

Anyway, reboot your system, but hit F8 so you get the Windows bootmenu. Select option 2, so that the boot is logged to bootlog.txt. Once you finally finish loading in Windows, run BLA, and look at the log file for long load times. You should be able to find your slow boot problem with this file.

That is perfectly normal. LAN connections always have slowed down boot time and always will. Normal boot time for a network is about a minute 45 to 2 minutes. Change your expectations. :)

Man! It's so simple! I could have done this a long time ago and spared myself the 30 second wait at every boot up. Thanks Calin, that's what I was trying to do. Presetting the IP didn't mess up my internet connection. Everythings working and boot up wait time at desktop is 3-5 seconds. Much better!

I'll do a search for that Boot Log Analyzer altonb1.

Thanks everyone!
