Network Card causing internet access problem !!! HELP !!!

I have a machine with a 56K Internal modem that I've been using healthily for almost a year now. Last night, I plan to install an additional component - a NIC card, an ISA network card to be exact. And now ..... internet access doesn't work anymore. My modem would dial and the connection would show in the system tray. But my web-browsers(IE and Navigator) would not make it out to cyberspace. Nor does my ICQ and other IM clients hook-up like they're all supposed to.

Please help. :(

Its probably because your NIC is using the IP and DNS settings and not the dial up adapter. Try diabling the NIC and try it again. Also, make sure the IP and/or DNS settings are there for your dial up adapter or manually set it up within your DUN settings.

I have gone into Device Manager to disable the NIC, but I still can't get IE/Netscape/ICQ to link .....

How do I fix the IP and DNS settings ? I am rather new to the networking field. My plan is to network my 2 computers together to share a single internet access. But then, I couldn't get very far because after putting in the NIC and installing the driver ..... this whole problem arised !!!

The other issue is DUN ..... I use Netzero, which runs its own Auto-dialer !

Please help !!! :(

There are many good sites that describe how to set up LAN - try www.homepclan.com. You might have resource conflict between NIC and modem. If you've got a PCI modem in slot 5, you could well have a conflict (even if it doesn't show in device manager).

I've looked into the Device Manager and there is no conflict.

If my ISA NIC has a hidden conflict with my PCI #5, would it affect my web browsers and IM clients ? I mean ..... the weird thing is my modem could dial through because the connection shows up in my system tray. The problem has to be somewhere else which prevents my web browsers and IM clients to not be able to go out to the internet.

Any other ideas ? Please ?

Since yesterday, I have done the following:

1. Removed all modem and network devices from the Device Manager to allow redetection.

2. Removed all network neighborhood clients, adapters, protocols and services.

3. Finally, after #1 and #2 didn't solve anything ..... I have reinstalled Win98SE.

4. Still doesn't work !!!

Please advise. :(

what IP are you using for your NIC? remove all gateway settings for the NIC and set it to a private IP. (10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, etc.) Since the metric is smaller for the NIC, windows tries to route the packets there first. By using a non-routable IP range, it will (should?) automatically drop to the second route. Drop to a command prompt (ms-dos prompt) and run a route print after connecting. print the results here and we'll see what we can do =)

I have removed the ISA NIC and postpone my plans to link both my computers together for now. All I wish to recover is the ability of my main computer to work properly again.

I dialed-up to my ISP and ran a route print through the MS-DOS prompt.

Here is the result:

Network address
0.0.0.0
127.0.0.0
129.37.0.0
129.37.209.26
129.37.255.255
224.0.0.0
255.255.255.255

Netmask
0.0.0.0
255.0.0.0
255.255.0.0
255.255.255.255
255.255.255.255
224.0.0.0
255.255.255.255

Gateway Address
129.37.209.26
127.0.0.1
129.37.209.26
127.0.0.1
129.37.209.26
129.37.209.26
129.37.209.26

Interface
129.37.209.26
127.0.0.1
129.37.209.26
127.0.0.1
129.37.209.26
129.37.209.26
129.37.209.26

Metric

I have no idea what all those numbers mean ..... Networking is not my trade, therefore ..... if you are able to interpret those numbers, please explain to me. I hope it helps to diagnose the problem with my computer. :(

I have checked my modem and it works fine, therefore this is most likely not a hardware problem.

It is also most likely not a problem with individual applications, like IE, ICQ and so on, because they all don't work !

My guess is that it has something to do with the DUN, DNS or TCP/IP because I could dial-in to my ISP successfully. Something strange is preventing my web-browsers and IM clients from going out to the internet.

Please help !

the route print thing was to check the results when you had both the modem and the network card.

As for your new problem, remove dial-up networking, remove the tcp/ip stack, reboot, then add them back in and apply any patches/y2k fixes. Hopefully that should do it. (that's what did it for me anyways a few months back)
