Network caching help needed for SETI

I have a network of about 15 computers I have access to. (Maybe more if setup is easy) They do not have internet access. I am currently using SETIhide on several of them, but I have to go once a week to each one to import/export. I am looking for a way to have them all connect to one computer for ease of access. I thought about setiqueue but if I remember correctly I would have to copy/zip a whole folder to transfer to another computer. I need to keep export size to the size of a floppy due to no USB support(Winnt 4.0 🙁)

I appreciate any help. If this can be set up, it will add about 150-200 wu's per day to my totals. So please help me find a solution

Not one single PC has internet access? Um, I think you can set them all up with setihide, have them all set to get WU's from one system, then sneaker net wu's back and forth to that one pc. But I think setihide will only cache 99, so you may want to set up 2-3 to be the distributer of wu's. I did this a long time ago and it worked well, just a pain taking wu's back and forth. Too bad one did not have internet access, you could set up a queue then.

Maybe you could get your hands on a parallel port hard drive or something? That might do the trick. 😉

Something like This?

A bit pricy, but it comes with a USB and Parallel port connector. 🙂

Or if you have a lappy drive, THIS might work.

😀

Are the PCs networked together?

If so, could you put a cheap USB PCI card in one of those machines? Then you could use a pen type hard drive, with SETIQ installed to go back and forth between the SETIQ PC and an Internet connected PC. 🙂

Do you have access to a ZIP drive? They've fallen out of favor recently and you can get a parallel port model very cheap here on the AT forums or *Bay. They come in 100 meg and 250 meg varieties. Here's my idea. This assumes that the 15 clients are networked to each other

1. You'll need two ZIP drives.
2. Connect one ZIP drive to an Internet enabled PC
3. Connect the other to your network of 15 PCs without Internet.
4. Install SetQ directly to the zip drive on the Internet enabled PC.
5. Grab as many WUs as you can until you fill up the ZIP disk.
6. Take the ZIP disk to the other network.
7. Pop the ZIP disk into the computer with the ZIP drive on that network.
8. Run SetiQ from the ZIP disk.
**The beauty of SetiQ is that you can pick up the folder and relocate it to another machine without having to reinstall the software.
9. Point your 15 clients to the SetiQ machine and your crunching!
10. Once you run out of WUs on the ZIP disk, take it back to the Internet enable machine, allow SetiQ to upload to Berkeley and repeat the process.

This whole situation would be much easier if USB were an option, stupid NT4.0!

Doesn't any of these machines have a modem? What OS are they running? Do you hav total control of at least one machine in this network?

If one has a modem connected to an active phoneline and you have total control of that particular machine, can you setup dial networking with that machine? or PCAnywhere?

EvilWobbles, that's the process I was thinking of, only with the external hard drive. Zip drives would work well too! 🙂

Thanks for the Ideas. I am probably going to use a USB HArddrive to run Setiqueue. I am going to try and use KNOPPIX which will make the usb ports available for use. The only problem might be accessing the NTFS partitions on the NT 4.0 computer. I will keep you all updated.
