This is an odd one, and basically it's too late now but maybe someone will have some thoughts.
(first, just for the record, I know what I'm doing - this is an oddball fringe case, so please don't suggest that the issue is, for instance, a bad network cable....
Integrated cheapo PC - was running Windows 98, everything worked fine. (more or less) For various reasons, I decided to upgrade to WinXP. Here's the oddity - after upgrading to XP, on bootup, the computer reports "network cable unplugged" even though it clearly isn't. Disabling the network interface, and then re-enabling it, suddenly everything works fine.
So, I realize this is basically a driver issue. However, since the PC itself is all integrated, and it's circa 1999, I can't find updated drivers. I have tried 5 different ones. I've tried forcing the media type, and anything else I can find. I found a registry key to disable windows notification of network events - no change.
I did some google searches and found that this wasn't TOO uncommon a problem - but never found any good resolutions to it. ( most people found a newer network driver that fixed their issue )
Any thoughts? The only thing I can come up with is that it appears this may be a combination HPNA/Ethernet interface. (hpna? the phone line networking crap..) All I can think is that maybe under XP the driver is trying to initialize to the phone line interface, which fails... but that still doesn't explain why restarting the interface clears everything up...
Last question: Is there any command line way to restart the nic? Couldn't find one, but I guess worst case I could put something like that into the startup folder...but right now, it looks like I'm going to have to revert back to 98.
