Trying to network my new machine (1.1ghz, Win2K SP1) and my work laptop (98SE) cross-over cable. Can't seem to get them to see each other.

Don't want to mess with the settings on my company laptop, where the IP address is done automatically.

What do I have to do for my 1.1ghz/Win2k machine to get it to see the laptop? HELP!!!

Install Netbeui on both machines and set it as the default LAN protocol. It won't disrupt your work tcp/ip setup.

Since my laptop is setup for IP address automatically, when I go into WIn2K and set up an IP address if 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 shouldn't they both see each other?

No. Because your work laptop is setup to use DHCP to get an IP address. Unless you have a DHCP server on your home network, your laptop will never get an IP address. The only IP address it will get is the APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing). This is a new extension for IPv4 that will allow a machine that is setup for Automatic IP Addressing (DHCP) to assign itself an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. I cannot remember of the top of my head if Windows 98 or 98SE supports this. I know that Windows 2000 does, but I am almost certain that Windows 98 does. Windows 95 does not.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

uh, you don't want to waste time and setup a dhcp server if you are only
using a crossover cable. Just install netbeui on both and
you should have your lan working.
