I like Netscape better than IE, but I'm running into some troubles running it in XP. I'd like to put it as my default web browser (so it'll appear at the start menu as the default browser). I also have some problems with my MS mouse, the back and forward buttons won't work with it. How can I fix those problems?

In file types you can specify it as the program to open .htm or .html files. I don't know what you mean by "default browser in the Start Menu" though.

I have Netscape 6.2 running in XP with no problems.

I have IE as the default browser, but my MS Mouse back and forward buttons work great in Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, and IE.

Make sure you have the Intellipoint drivers installed for your mouse.

I mean that in the start menu there are 2 programs that are always in the left part of the window, one for "Internet" and the other for E-mail. I'd like to set Netscape as the "Internet" program, not IE. I went to the Start menu properties, and the only program available to do this job is IE (under "Show on Start Menu", in customize).

I have the Intellipoint drivers installed, and it won't work. I can't figure out why. The scrolling wheel works, but the back, forward and wheel buttons won't.

not sure on the back and forward issue then

to fix the other item go right click on your taskbar and go to properties.

select the start menu tab, then click on customize.

You should see options to then change the default Browser and Email program on the start menu.

When I changed the default program for HTML files it automatically changed the program in the start menu. Can't fix the mouse buttons issue, though.

Unless there's something in NS 6.x that you *really* need, do yourself a huge favor and get Mozilla 0.9.8 instead.

Reinstalled Netscape and the mouse drivers. Almost everything works now, except the wheel button, that right now works as an "open in new window" button.

Does it support Flash and Shockwave Director plugins? If it does, then I can give it a try. I'm an art director, so I have to have support for this kind of eye candy.

I know Flash works out of the box (not sure if Mozilla ships w/ it, or just borrows the Netscape-installed version). In general, it has full Netscape plugin compatibility. I would suspect that when you install Mozilla, it copies over all plugins from the Netscape plugins directory. And since Mozilla is a wholly separate app, it doesn't really hurt much to give it a try.

Netscape is basically an old Mozilla branch + a bunch of commercial AOL crap on top. I'm not sure if the oldness or the AOL crap is worse. ;)
