cash is the way to go on these. netpliance is moving on to a different marketing strategy and apparently trying to leave the past behind them (and about time).
i know i'll be using 2 in cars and one for the house as mp3 players (&prob gps/map in at least 1 car).
 
I just picked up the last three of these that were in stock in Tucson, AZ. The sales clerk at circuit city was even talking to me about how these can be modified.

Just wanted to add that I got a call from CompUSA tonight that one my wife and I had asked to reserve was in. Going to pick it up Friday (and pay cash).

Another thing about the seal. It only says "if the seal is broken.."
You can easily get the iopener out of the box without breaking the seal at all, so then there is no worry. If they want to play lawyer ball by putting a seal like that, then you can play lawyer ball getting around the seal.
 
I picked one up about a week ago at CC. No contract. No "warning seal." Epoxy on chip. IDE pins intact. Waiting for parts to arrive. 🙂

The i-opener is a small internet surfer that you use with a propritary isp. Thats all it was meant to do.

Any way to get this to work with one of the free ISP's without hacking the BIOS chip?
My mom is 76 and uses (shudder!) WEB TV. I'd like to set her up with something better, but don't have the time right now to be full-time Tech Support for one PC.
She's not senile or anything (still drives and just stopped working!), just not quite ready to be turned loose with a real computer.

Yup, I read at C|Net that Netpliance is raising the price to $400 and yes, there is no committment required even for the $100 ones.
 
I just got one direct-shipped from CircuitCity.com for $99. I live in Washington State, so for those of you in the area, there may be a few left. 75% off is a hot deal in my book, and this would be great for the grandparents to use, I think. All they really want is e-mail and rudimentary web surfing.
 
My motto as far as this is concerned is to not expect very much, and I'm sure I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Of course, if even this is too difficult for the grandparents, I have a new toy to hack around with ...
 
Well, picked up mine from CompUSA. Made me get the 3 months of service. No biggie, still worth it to me. Anyone can pick another up for me without service contract (Circuit City won't let me order it for where I live), I'd be glad to paypal you the money.

Yep, that's what I had in mind also 😉

Picked mine up from CircuitCity tonight, did not have to sign anything, but they do have that &quot;seal&quot; on the box. Can easily get it out of the box w/o breaking through that, but I don't know if that means much?
 
I just got one (my second) from CC today for $99. I love the GPS.MP3 player in my truck and had to get another one at this price. I bought my first direct for $147 (they charge you for shipping!).

About the sticker on the top of the box. It says if the box is open (not if broken) you agree to..... What do you think will happen about the 3 month service or $499 charge? I used a webcertificate. Do you think I am safe. Do these newest IOs (June 2000 on box) still have an IDE header?
 
Does anyone know if the iopener will work with windows CE as an OS? I thought maybe that OS would be less stressful on the on the whole system itself seeing that it has little memory to spare and the cpu isn't all that great.
 
dammit.. and I thought that this was a post about how they were back again 😡 CC has removed the iopener from its site.
 
Thanks to this forum, I am using my Hot Deals Microsoft USB speakers with the I-Opener (remember that one?) and my Hot Deals Intelogis Passport networking kit. With no floppy or CD drive it's most useful when networked. Funny how toys bought through the help of this forum end up being useful in something totally unexpected down the road...

Perhaps if the originator of this message could change the subject so every time someone (like myself) bumps this to the top we don't think that it's in stock?

Update on the IOpener:

Netpliance has officially discontinued the IOpener and will never ship any more product to any more stores. As of this time, NO Circuit City has ANY IOpeners and will not ever again. Instead, the new Iopener-2001 will come out, but it will retail at $399. Expect that in stores in about 2 months or so.

 
HarvardGuy: Keep in mind that the Iopener was 'discontinued' 4 times from CC, and 2times at CompUSA. each time it came back... also from what I understand, the reason the price was raised is so that they can cut it again when christmas rolls around. I highly doubt that the 'Iopener 2001' will be the same as the Iopener only with upgraded software capabilities. who knows, maybe the acutally would redesigned the MB so as to have no ability to add external IDE devices, but I doubt that since they have to have that in order to put the system software on the Sandisk.
 
Well, Just dropped by the Compton store that I backordered from soooo very long ago on 3/20/00. Was told then that I was the first to backorder there but after all these months hadn't heard word one from them about these gems. My surprise visit to them today has me quite delighted in the fact that I'm the proud new father of three little I-Openers and now to hear that the price has increased %400 makes it even sweeter. Paid by Visa. Was curious about that pesky sticker on the seal. They got no contract sig from me! 🙂
 
I had an i-opener (before the cut IDE pins and altered bios) and its not all that its cracked up to be 🙁 and especially you don't get a laptop hard drive its kinda bulky because u have a big power supply sitting behind it! also there are quite afew hidden costs!
