netlfix on xbox360 without gold account

Rallispec

Lifer
I've been able to stream netflix movies to my xbox in the past using a gold account - however I don't have one now and don't feel like paying to get one.

I've tried using VMCNetflix with vista media center- which looks like it would work great except that I'm using the netflix silverlight player which doesn't seem to work with xbox.

Are their any other options, or does anyone know if it is possible to download the old flash based netflix player?

Thanks!

Try PlayOn. It costs $40 right now but that is the only other option.

Playon is an option - but for $40 i might as well upgrade to a gold account... Thanks for the tip though.

I'll probably end up just waiting it out until somebody comes out with something new, unless anyone here has another options.

thanks!

Playon is a one time $40 vs. xbox live being 30 bucks every year. . Only thing against playon is that you don't know how long they'll stick around.

There are a lot of other advantages to XBL.

at the time being, you can keep getting playon trials. until they fix the bugs I am not planning to pay yet.

The options are covered, so completely OT: It is great to see you posting Danny, it has been a long time, man. Your forums bitd = good times/memories.

could buy the netflix ROKU player for $99, not monthly fees for that

Good solution, I have used a ROKU box in the past with no problems. If you already have a TIVO, it also supports NETFLIX.

FYI: The ROKU box only offers stereo audio at this point, and still does not stream HD video. Personally I would not buy a ROKU until I could get HD video and surround sound.

Roku does stream HD. Nobody is capable of doing surround sound at this point because Netflix only streams in stereo.

When did they add HD support? I looked into buying one of these last year, and they told me that HD was not supported.

They enabled HD streaming for Roku right around Christmas.

Ah, I just looked that up on the site. It's only 720p though - oh well, almost there 🙂.

Someday they may support 1080i/p with surround!

Well, I think the bandwidth requirements for the current HD streaming is right around 6mbps. They have plans for surround sound but that is going to drastically increase the streaming requirements beyond what is available to most people. Throw in 1080i/p and you're looking at having Japan-like connections. 🙂

I didn't realize you had to pay for XBL to do Netflix streaming. Weak.

They have to have reasons to justify charging for XBOX Live Gold. The whole "pay to play peer-to-peer online" argument is getting old.

Not that I agree with it, but it's their marketing angle.
