Netgear WGR614: Wired and Wireless connection drops?

I have a Netgear WGR614 v4 and have had it for a while. The Firmware has been flashed to the latest and so far, all it does it drop connections either Wireless or Wired. The amount of time it takes to the drop the 802.11 connection is probably 90 seconds after connecting to the router.

So, I add the MAC addresses to the filter in the router for the PC's that's going to be connecting. Same issue. Using WPA or WEP will just stop any connection within the filtered list. So, it's useless.

The 802.11 adapters are a vary of many. Mainly a Comcast Linksys 802.11b for now. But, the previous were Netgear 802.11g PCI adapter, Gateway 802.11G PCI adapter, Belkin 802.11g adapter USB, just to name a few.

All exhibit same issue. It's been RMA'd enough times. I also had a Linksys 802.11g router as well and didn't exhibit these issues with any adapter. Not to say Linksys is better. But, the Westell Gateway/Router perform similar to the linksys in stability with the same cards mentioned aboved.

I'm wondering though; If the WGR614v4 only functions with Netgear based adapters by deault and drops the connections from other brands? I seen a Netgear USB 802.11g adapter for $10 and thought this might solve the issue if I use compatible chipsets. But, this can't hardly be the issue if the other routers can do as stated with no problems.

I also checked Netgear support forums and support is beyond a joke. Makes Sienfield look dry.

Does anyone here have this router?

I HAD this router (actually, I still do but it's in a box in the closet). I had some similar problems with it dropping the wireless connections and finally went to a Linksys WRT54G and haven't had a problem since (well, I can't say that but the Linky is light-years ahead of the Netgear and the problem wasn't a hardware prob). My suggestion? Get a WRT54G (you can get them on the cheap) and be happy. HTH

The Ironic part about your suggestion is that I already had that Linksys WRT54G as well. While it didn't drop the connection. It would lock up like crazy. I'm guessing a firmware update has added stability to date.

I guess you can not rule out Luck in life.

I have both of these routers, WRT54G, and WGR614 and they work very well.

May be some thing in your general configuration is the trouble.

You mentioned a Modem/Router and then you use a second Router. Do you Double NAT?

I've checked everything and seen the threads over @ Netgears forum about similar issues. I even searched this forum to see that there are atleast 3 other threads that state similar issues.

The "Gateway/Router" mentioned is from Verizon. It's a Westell. Not a single product you can purchase in the store.

The configuration to question is something that I am basically asking. Does anyone have one with Wireless adapters? If so, which adapters are you using and how are they connected to the network?

The sameway I add MAC addresses to the filter for Westell and Linksys, is the sameway I tried on the Netgear. The Netgear will drop the connections no matter which brand of adapter I purchased. But the same variant of adapters will work with no problem on the Westell and Linksys and stay connected indefintely until the Routers are shut off.

FWIW, my PC loses its connection to my Netgear all the time, but I think it's the card rather than the WAP. Reason being that my laptop stays connected to the router all the time.

Router is WGT624 v3, PCI card is WG311T. Whenever my card drops the connection, it's as if all available wireless LANs had disappeared. The only way to get it back on is to reboot the PC (3-6 times per day, depending on how often I'm on the PC). I want to replace the card and see if that fixes it.

Doesn't seem related to your problem, unless it's some wacky Netgear problem.

I had those issues as well. The PC would be connected and as soon as data is transmissioned, the connection would drop and will no longer connect to Netgear WAP. Reboot the PC, then faced with Windows Zero configuration exclamation points. Reboot again, then "Repair the network" by right clicking windows wireless troubleshooting wizard. Again, reboot. Then, it connects back to the WAP. Only for a short period of time as if it were a 'lease' of some sort to only fall off the network again.

I'd hate to throw the Router in the trash physically. My next shot would be to purchase a Netgear WG111 USB card to see if it will stay attached to the network as a brand to brand ordeal.
