Netgear RT314 question

This may be a silly question. But, hear goes. I have 2 new in the box Netgear RT314 routers sitting in front of me. 1 is labeled "Made in China". The other says "Made in Tiawan". The boxes are identical just the "Made in" labels are different. What I am wondering is if there maybe some difference in quality or if one maybe an older version than the other. Also I wonder if there might be a quality difference?

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? All insight is welcomed!

Heh, thanks! Well, I'm not sure if there would be any quality difference or any difference at all. I would doubt it. I have one of the same units, but in all honesty I never checked where it was manufactured.

If it's older firmware that's easy enough to upgrade.

I just looked at my RT314 box and it's made in taiwan. I've had it running for a few months now without a hiccup.

This is typical. You'll see it with a lot of computer product. Hell! You'll even see product typically made in Taiwan with a sticker OVER the Taiwan sticker that reads "Made In China".

Whoever can make it cheaper/faster.

One of them may have a chip with BootBase 1.xx which would enable you to flash it with Zyxel firmware.;) That would be very cool. What I'm getting at is this, possibly one location is producing routers with BootBase 2.xx (non-Zyxel firmware flashable) while the other location is producing routers with BootBase 1.xx and 3.xx (Zyxel firmware flashable). That would solve this mystery. Too bad you would have to hook them both up to find out.

I just checked mine (Taiwan) and its bootbase version: V1.05. Is it worth flashing to Zyxel firmware? What will that do for me?

thanks

Zyxel Firmware = Lexus
Netgear Firmware = Yugo

Seriously, the Zyxel firmware has some nice features that the Netgear version doesn't have....yet. Such as if you have configured filter sets for your LAN's firewall it gives you the ability to run a logging program like Kiwi Syslogd. This is called SNMP. There are a few other things that don't come to mind right now (I am at work and can't check) but I just like the Zyxel version better.

what do you mean by bootbase? Do you mean the shipping firmware revision?

Dang y'all.. I just bought mine from Bestbuy (RT314) 3-4 weeks ago for 79 bones! Considering the 1 port router was like $119 @Bestbuy. I thought that it was a refurbished POS. I asked the all knowing people there(i say that very lightly! :) ) and they said that Bestbuy doesn't sell Refurbished equipment. Maybe they bought a surplus of it or something, and it wasn't an opened item either! Believe me i looked! I took it home, plugged it in and it had the newest firmware 3.24. I had no probs with it. It runs like a raped ape! :-D Not sure if it's the same price or not now.
Not sure if it was manufactured in Taiwan or China. G/L with all!

One thing to make sure. The bootbase and the firmware revision are NOT the same. The bootbase is hardcoded into the chip whereas the firmware can be updated.

That is a good point. The point I was making was that without the correct bootbase you cannot upgrade to Zyxel firmware.
