Netgear RT314 causing lag

I've left my router / switch combo on 24/7/365 for the past 3 years or so. Nowadays the router causes lag anywhere from 10ms (normal) to 1000ms. This can sometimes be temporarily (as in fixed for 5 minutes) if I reset the router before the ping fluctuates anywhere from 10 - 600ms again.

Should I just blindly update the firmware and pray this works? Or what else could be causing the problem?

Sounds like the router is going bad to me! Only other thing I can think of that would cause the much lag would be a faulty NIC / cable.

If the router worked well for 3 years I don't think firmware will do much for you. Might be time for a new router if the NIC / Cables are fine!

things go bad all the time in technology. coudl have been a faulty part that is just now affecting performance. and dust is a big factor too, but things do break
