Today and tomorrow are the last days to take advantage of this great deal! The Onvia.com coupon expires tomorrow, so if you want in on this deal, I suggest that you hurry!

Does anyone have any information on the $90 Netgear fs105 5-port switch that Paulcal1 is refering to. Is this a router also and if so why not this instead of the rt311.

Hi, golfisart--

The FS105 to which PaulCal1 referred is a SWITCH, meaning, you can share a connection among several computers like a hub, and the connection between them is FULL DUPLEX--each computer has a full 10- or 100-Mbit bandwidth, whereas a HUB is HALF DUPLEX, meaning that ALL of the computers share the bandwidth.

A ROUTER, on the other hand, allows you to rout IP's from one network to another, such as if you had your LAN (Local Area Network) connected to a WAN (Wide Area Network), like the internet. This particular router also can act as a firewall, keeping unwanted activities out of your LAN. This router only has one port IN and one port OUT. You can plug the router into your SWITCH, and share the a single internet connection among several different computers. Hopefully, this will clarify the issue for you.

Thank you Perrytexan. I just figured out Paulcal1 was responding to Chonos' comment on the Linksys 4 port + switch. Question to you is which switch, the Hawkings you just posted or the $90 Netgear fs105 5-port switch?(which then bring up, can you use Onvia $25 off more than once?) Thanks again. Nice post.

Hi, golfisart--

I think you probably COULD use the Onvia.com coupon more than once, but the switch I posted about isn't at Onvia--it's at Computers4sure, and they have their own rebate thing going on. The switch I posted about (the Hawking Technologies PN808ES), if it's anything like the one I already have (the PN505ES), is a great little switch. You would be able to plug this router into the Hawking switch, and have internet connectivity for a BUNCH of machines! As far as the FS105, I think the Hawking switch is probably just as good, and it's lower priced AND has 3 more ports *PLUS* an uplink port! I really like the one I have, and I am hoping the 8-port model is just as good!

Hi, Rebelcrazed--

You can find the coupon code posted on several different web sites, including techbargains.com, and to use it, you would simply enter the code as you are checking out.

i tried the $25 off $100 coupon from techbargains.com , but it said i needed $200 worth of merchandise in my basket before it'd let me use the coupon. Could someone email to let me know where I can get a valid onvia $25 off $100 coupon? thanks!

the onvia coupon has been changed to $200 minimum purchase. this sucks, but i guess $89.50 is still a good deal.

What is the # for the Netgear router with a switch in it? The RT311 only has a hub. Also, can you use the $25 off code more than once? I already used mine in the Hercules 3D Prophet 2 deal.

Hi, SilentBoB--

Unfortunately, the $25 off $100 coupon expired on Saturday, and there is no replacement (as yet) for it. Also, there isn't a NetGear router that also has a hub/switch to my knowledge. There *IS*, however, lots of hubs/switches out there at good prices, like the one I posted here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=177272

You probably will be able to find other stuff out there that will fit your needs too. Good Luck!

<<Also, there isn't a NetGear router that also has a hub/switch to my knowledge>>

PerryTexan,

I think the RT311 has a hub in it. I want a router with a switch in it, but the Linksys one I don't trust. I figure I'll get a router with a switch in it or buy a router and also that $40 switch deal.

SilentBob: The Netgear RT311 only has one WAN port (to connect your DSL or cable modem to) and one LAN port (to connect to an optional hub or switch). Again, if you get the Netgear RT311 you'll need a hub or a switch. In my case, I already had a Netgear FS108 8-port 10/100 switch and recently took advantage of this deal to get the RT311. It was relatively easy and simple to install (as compared to my Cisco ADSL routers) and everything is working great so far.

I have the Linksys with the 4 port switch. Had to return the first one because of frequent lock ups, but the second one hasn't given me a problem yet. I'm happy with it.

Sugar, I installed the new/beta firmware on my initial installation. It has run perfectly. My service does not use PPOE, but the option is there.

Actually, according the the telnet session I used, both of my routers came configured with the v2.50 (M.02) software/firmware installed, and both would support PPoE out of the box. You shouldn't NEED to install any thing else.

UPDATE on the Onvia/Netgear RT311 router deal:

For those of you that (like me) tried to get into this deal a few days late only to find out that Onvia had pulled the RT311 from their website, they've added this router back as of today (geeze, imagine that Beave, the day after the $20 rebate expired.... hmmm....). So if you *had* a burning desire to get this router, then it is available again through through Point Click.com (banned word?), on the Onvia website - however the $20 rebate has expired and you have to purchase $200 through Onvia to use the $25 off coupon.

Netgear RT311 router - $119.00
Netgear FS105 switch - $ 89.95
Total before discounts - $208.95
Onvias $25 off coupon - $ 25.00
Total w/ Onvia coupon - $183.95
PointClick 10% rebate - $ 18.40
*Total, with discounts - $165.55

I got this from Buy.com. Sadly, I live in CA, so had to pay tax, and ordered before the free shipping promotion going through the 4th. Buy.com *had* a $20 mail-in rebate, but there was some discussion of an extension due to Netgear's pseudo-recall of units. I used the $20 bizrate coupon at Buy, plus the $20 rebate, and even in CA, it's $98 less the ebates 6%. You might call Negear to see about the rebate.

(The mini-recall was due to a bug in their software under Win 98, I think. It crashed on install at certain points, so they're replacing the bundled software, hence the lack of stock eberywhere. There's a workaround on their site, but I suspect they didn't want a bunch of dumbasses calling their tech support who can't take the time to check the website.)

For those who are wondering about this vs. the Linksys, most accounts (as previously stated here) say this is a much better, albeit more difficult to configure, router.

(And I wouldn't get a router/switch. I'd much rather get a separate router and switch, especially since I already have a switch. :) )
