Go to this link for the router:

*****EDIT*****

Corrected the link (Thanks Jatwell!)
Added information about the $20 Rebate (Thanks PaulCal1)
Added Pointclick discount information (Corrected by hkchan)

The total now, SHIPPED for the router is $65.46, based on subtracting a 10% PointClick discount and a $20 Mail In Rebate!

http://www.onvia.com/CNetShopper/products/index.cfm?Task=ViewProduct&SearchText=RT311&IdCatalog=2379732, it's listed for $119.95 there, then use one of the $25 coupons floating around, and that brings the price down to $94.95. Onvia.com has free shipping, so that ends up as the price it's shipped at!

For more information regarding this router, here is a review by Tim Higgins:

http://www.timhiggins.com/reviews/netgear_rt311.asp

If you're looking for a good, low cost, feature-laden router to use as a firewall on your broadband connection, this seems to be the best bang for the buck--BUT--it may be a little too difficult for the average user to configure, according to Tim, and judging by what he said, I think I'd have to agree.

Still, it's a pretty good deal for an Ethernet ROUTER!! It's also got more features than the Linksys or D-Link, according to Tim--here's the comparison chart (provided in another thread by someone else):

Hi, Paulcal1--

Hey, Thanks for the heads up on the $20 rebate! I also just realized that Onvia is a member of Pointclick, so you can also get an additional 10% off if you're a member.

SO--The total price after rebates, discounts and coupons SHIPPED would be:

$119.95
$(9.50) Pointclick Discount
$(25.00) Onvia Coupon
$(20.00) Rebate from NetGear
TOTAL: $ 65.46 WHAT A GREAT PRICE FOR A ROUTER!!

****EDIT****

Corrected PointClick discount amount--Thanks hkchan!

PerryTexan,

You don't get $12.00 of discount from PointClick. 10% is taken off of ($119.95-$25) or $94.95. So you'll get $9.50.

I have the netgear router on my home cable, and it is as solid as any cisco router I have installed. (cisco may have more features, but it costs 10 times this to even think about cisco) My RT311 runs 24/7 and has been rebooted once in 6 months.
There is almost no latency going through it. And I never have had problems with packet loss or corrupt data that I have read about with the linksys model.
You can install this with their included software in about 5 minutes and forget it, or you can go command line and make it as "difficult" as you want with static routes, port forward/blocking and more.

You can get the netgear fs105 5 port switch 10/100 for about $90.00. The price comes out about the same for better quality imho.

I got my router today, too! I thought I might as soon as I called them up and got the tracking number (I only live a few miles away from one of their warehouses). At this price, I might just order another one!

I'm a little fuzzy about this Pointclick discount thing; how does one obtain the discount? Do we have to submit for it after we have ordered, as with Brands For Less, or do they automatically know when we go through them to one of their network member sites? Please clarify, because I just ordered another one, and I'd like to get it for the price I posted!

I wouldn't get the Linksys. I recently purchased the Linksys Etherfast DSL/Cable Router and it has given me alot of problems. One problem is that it keeps disconnecting and freezes which requires a restart.

I exchanged it for the Netgear RT311 Router and it has worked perfectly on my DSL connection. Not one drop in the past week I got it.

I agree with TomGuy. I spoke to a coworker yesterday and he had a lot of data corruption problems. Supposedly this is a known issue with DSL and the LinkSys router; his ISP asked him if he lives on the East Coast (he groaned when they asked b/c he does).

I really would like to buy the Netgear for its firewall capabilities to protect my computer that is hooked up to a cable modem. I would rather spends $65 on a hardware router than $40 to register BlackICE Defender. How easy is it to set up the firewall (I have no experince with routers at all) and how well will it work? I just want it to protect my computer, nothing fancy. Thanks.

How would this affect me (I play games often)?

"Although the RT311 supports "DMZ" capability, gamers also may want to look at other products due to the limit of 7 single mapped ports and the difficulty of using the more advanced Filter capability."

This is a full fledged router, it is not a weiner proxy server. You should have no problem playing games with it. One bad thing about the router is that it only has a telnet interface to set it up. No pimp java applet. So newbies should beware. Other than that it looks pretty sweet, and netgear is a good name.

I believe the setup is pretty easy. If you know something about networking two computers together you should have no problem setting it up. Took me 5 minutes to set it up.

Excellent router and for 65 dollars definitely get one! I just got a small 4 port Netgear hub at BestBuy for 14.97 so total comes out to be around 90 dollars.. much cheaper than that linksys crap.

A switch is similiar to a hub except that a switch gives you full bandwidth capabilities to each computer whereas a hub splits up the bandwidth.

A router is used to split up the connection so that two or more computers can share a Cable / DSL line.

If you get the Netgear RT311 router, you would need to buy a switch or hub. I would recommend getting just a hub because a switch cost so many times more for almost no performance gains in a small lan network.
