Netgear RT 314

I need a router for two machines on a cable modem that uses DCHP. Is the Netgear 314 what I really need or should I be looking at something else. Is the hardware firewall hard to setup ? I am ignorant when it comes to the networing aspect of computers. Thanks

My aunt set up the same router for 3 computers and she could barely work a fork and knife.🙂 It's a very nice router. Others in its class are the SMC 7004 which comes with a print server and the Linksys 4 port model (something like the BEFSR...).

If you read through the manual, setting the router up should be a breeze. Also, unless you plan on running some kind of server off of your network, you won't have to play around with the Firewall settings.

Thanks, I forgot to add in file and print sharing between the two machines. I know I need a hub to do this. Do I just need 4 cat5 cables or do I need some cross over cables also. If I got this right. I plug the cable modem into the router via cat5 then plug the hub into the router via cat5 then plug the two pc into the hub via cat5 and setup file and print sharing. Is this correct. Thanks

The RT314 comes with a built in switch, you shouldn't need an extra hub unless you have a crap load of computers to connect.

You want to share an internet connection with 2 pc's correct?

I assume you already have 1 cat 5 cable from your cable modem.
The RT314 comes with another cat 5 cable in it's box.

So all you need to get is one additional cat 5 cable (straight thru).
