Netgear Router Game issues

I am thinking about getting the Netgear 1 port router/firewall when I get Cable modem but I have heard that they sometimes have a problem with playing games on the internet. I am going to have 1-6 ppl playing the same game. Here are some internet programs I am going to be using:
Halflife
Shattered Galaxy
EVE: Second Genesis (hasn't come out yet)
Team Fortress 2 (ditto)
Tribes 2 (ditto)
ICQ

Can anyone possibly tell me if I will have problems running 6 ppl playing any of these programs through the Netgear 1 port Firewall? (Note: I will have a hub so don't worry about that)

Half Life works fine with 4 people. That is the most I have seen for my self. Starts to lag after the 3rd one though.

you are talking about the RT311 right? The only problem I have RT311 is that the SUA entry only allows you to forward 10 ports total.. or it can have a default forwarding address which will forward everything to that address.. so if a game requires you to have more then 10 ports open (M$ Direct Play is one.. used by MechWarrior4), then you'll need to setup a default forwarding address.. which also means you might want to add some more filter rules for the roueter and/or have another software firewall (like zonealarm) to protect your system from intrusion. Since the new firmware had web based UI, what I did is turn on the default forwarding address before I start the game, and turn it off after I finished.

Another consideration about getting a router to play games is that do you plan to have multiple machines share the same DSL/cable lines and joining the same game on a remote server? remember, from the remote server's point of view, all the requests came from a single IP, which it can not tell who's who behind the router. A lot of games will not work this way. and I'm not sure about those games you play will have
such problem or not.

If you want more port mapping options I would not get a netgear. Yes, you can only map 10 ports and you can't set a range of ports either. This is why I stopped using my Netgear RT311 and put together a Freesco box instead. Now I have allot more options and it is faster at updating things like Gamespy.

Whoosh... most of that stuff went over my head but I think I got the gist of it. What other firewalls do you reccomend because I have never heard of Freesco. Could I have it where I have like 3 ips are in DMZ and just have zonealarm or similar on them? Or could I do something like this? I don't really know terribly much about the specifics of networking but I know generalities. Thanks for your help so far.

I have a netgear RT311 and it works Ok "EXCEPT" it won't allow microsoft "gamevoice" to work through it, tech support claims, no netgear routers support a range of ports, my friend has a Lynksys router/hub and it works fine with game voice, I have to reboot without the router hooked up to use gamevoice, I'm gonna sell this crumby RT311 and get a Lynksys as soon as I see a hot deal on one, just my two cents!
& thanks for letting me vent a little.

I recommend the SMC Barricade router! I've had one for about 2 weeks and it works flawlessly.
I play a lot CounterStrike, Tribes, etc and I've never had a problem. Plus, it has a print server built in so you can hook your printer up to it and any computer connected to the router will be able to use it.

Here's the link to SMC

i have a netgear rt314 router, identical to the rt311 1port router, except thr rt314 has 4 ports. so far, i've played halflife and used icq fine on it.
