Huh? A cable modem doesn't serve as a lan DHCP server, unless it happens to also have it's own integral router making the 2nd router, redundant.

Otherwise, a normal ISP account can't do it, unless there was a multiple IP based ISP account which is the exception rather than the norm.

I don't see what InSuboRdiNaTioN would want to be rid of the firewall, but to effectively bypass it one would designate the systems as being in the DMZ zone in the router control panel.

Many cable providers will only give you one IP at a time....usually you need a router for multiple PCs to share cable.

After making my previous post I'd had occasion to fiddle with my cable modem (SB5120?, one of the surfboard 51xx) and it does actually have a DHCP server/NAT built in, but I'd never used the function since I had the router right after it.
