Netgear FA312 nic, doesn't connect to router upon restart

Hi,
I'm running Win2k, and have had a previous network card that worked perfectly. However, I changed network cards to the Netgear FA312 recently, and it's had the same problem ever since I got it. I even clean installed everything onto a different harddrive--same problem.

After installing the Netgear FA312, it works, I can connect to my router fine, use the shared dsl line, connect to my roommate's computer, etc. However, upon restarting (or shut down-turn on), I can't communicate with the network anymore. The light is still on in the back of the network card, the device is functioning properly, everything is fine that I can check, except that I can't connect. I checked the event viewer, and it says that the server couldn't bind to my computer (something like that) because a user with the same name is already on the network. This is impossible of course, since the network consists of only me and my roommate, Jon. Going into My Network Places properties, it shows a connected Local Area Network, which seems to be running fine. I check the status and it shows sent packets, but none received. So the card IS connected, but just can't communicate with it.

I can get it to work again temporarily by either 1) uninstall, restart, install drivers ... 2) disable in device manager, then enable again. However, this is only a temporary fix, and restarting the computer or turning it on after shutting off makes me unable to login to the network.

I called netgear customer service, and they took me through various fixes, changing connection to only 10 baseT, setting a fixed ip rather than auto connect, etc, but they all did not work. The 10baseT fix worked temporarily, because it disconnected me from the network. But restarting again yields the same results.

Any help please?

Do the following steps using DHCP assigned IP address and user assigned (static) IP address. Make sure the IP address is outside the availble pool of IP address of the DHCP Server.

1. Try "ping"-ing the router.
2. Try "ping"-ing each of the computers from the other computer.
3. Try "ping"-ing Yahoo/eGay or some website outside your network.
4. (When using DHCP assigned IP) Try an 'ipconfig /renew' command in the command prompt.

Was your previous NIC Netgear as well?
