Netgear 8-Port Gigabit switch

I know some folks have major hate and discontent with netgear (and newegg for that matter), but I didnt make this post so people could crap on their least favorite brands or stores.
Netgear has made a networking product or two and I thought this may interest some hardcore gamers. Not sure if the GS108 is a particularily good model or not.
They also have gigabit NIC's for 23 dollars. Setting up a hi-speed personal network is getting cheaper every year..

I saw that in the description. So far as I can tell, neither does my dinky little 4 port, 100 Mbit netgear router. I dont think I'm missing out on anything.
Is it really needed for a private LAN? What exactly does it do?

All you need to know

The long and the short of it is if you're just using it to rout your local internet trafic, or playing LAN games, then no, you don't need jumbo frames. If you're transfering lots of files however then it will make a big difference.

Unfortunatly you need to research to find out, some will say it on the box. The problem is you'll run into things like this

"Jumbo Frame" Switch

and while it says it supports jumbo frames it's also like 50% of what everyone else is charging. Of course there isn't a review to be found anywhere that I can tell of. Anyone know anything about this? ABS NW-111-8P

According to Toms Hardware, later versions of this DO support jumbo frames. See article on networking portion of site around 8/05. Netgear support said that product with serial numbers with a 127 prefix are jumbo frame capable.

Yep got in on that deal awhile ago and will soon be expanding my existing gigabit network with two of these switches.

Gigabit nic cards range from $13 shipped all the way thru $xxx.

I have both intel and cheap realtec-based giabit nic cards and they all work just fine.
