Whole lotta people being introduced to the weirdness of anime for the first time. Pretty good representation of Ed from my memory.

yeah, this seems spot on for anime

i had a couple anime show tapes as a kid, and it was just 120 minutes of huck finn and tom sawyer acting like this

Most of cowboy bebop specifically is pretty normal/serious, but Ed kinda concentrates all the weird shit into herself.

I'll give the 1st couple of eps a try for nostalgia
I just cant watch Valentine.
she has the attitude down, but the wrong body type.
Supposed to be long skinny body.

this is what i'd imagine a live action Valentine would look like:

Except wearing yellow and red.

fortunately, she's not in ep2.
and ep2 was great!
so they're no longer broke with that $2M bounty, right? NOPE
i dont understand how they're always broke with big bountys like that. (fuel only costs $45k)

I love good anime... its not really something that lends itself well to live action though most of the time.

I wasn't thrilled with episode one but will reserve judgement for now.

the price of bounty's keep inflating to laughable heights.
$1M at the start to $90M in the middle of the series?!
How are they always broke?

Still dont like the illogical fact that the Elders bodyguards dont have guns.
and i always hated the ending of Cowboy Bebop.

but despite that, i liked it

That's what ruins the show for you? REALLY?!?

You have some pretty strange hang-ups.
Does any real-life woman have Faye's matching anatomical figure? No, not really. Not without CGI altering every frame that she would be in. You are wanting a barbie-doll to play her.

Get the fuck over it, man. Plenty of other minor nitpicks with the new series, but to be so hung up on one of the few female characters not having a matching body? Are...are you a nerdy 14 year old, now?

FWIW, I loved the original anime series and movie, and I also enjoyed this new live-action. It was obvious they tried to emulate the original stylization and cinematography, copied/recreated the intro, etc. I liked that they kept the original theme song.

There were some small issues I noticed here and there, but this was likely one of the best animation-to-live action adaptations that I've seen.

I already liked John Cho, but I thought he worked pretty well as Spike.

No, but face-to-face, people usually have a bit more shame and embarrassment after I point out their idiocy.

Doubling down and digging in heels on stupid mostly happens on the interwebs. So...ignore my entire point and carry on, I guess?

I'm probably wrong about this, but in the original series, wasn't she introduced as a new character after at least a few episodes.

I also remember her being emaciated and I think that was part of her backstory. The episode in which she was discovered (???), wasn't she starving on some bizarre planet? And didn't she always complain about being hungry? Either that, or was always fighting with the crew for food.

Bear in mind these are mostly memories of memories so there's no limit to how wrong they could be. However it's the sort of thing I'd relate to inasmuch as I was very similar in my teens and 20's.

iirc they actually picked her up in an alley just like that. Yeah she was scrawny but it looked more like '11 year old scrawny' vs 'starving in an alley scrawny'. She's far too capable to actually be starving. Yes, she was always fighting over food with the crew, but so was everyone else, that's what happens when your family is broke :p

yeah, I was wondering where all these complaining children expected casting to find a 5'11", 60lb Asian Woman with DDDs, begging to wear a napkin as her costume.

I don't understand the kids that love these cartoons. :D

People are stupid. For the character, she had some 'intent' behind her getup, it was mainly to get people do to what she wanted (specifically the kind of people that would be upset at the current casting choice I'd wager). Frankly I could care less if it's a faithful adaptation.

  • This is campy as hell.
  • Anime is 'sad but funny at times'. This is 'funny but sad at times'.
  • Casting is fine and this isn't the problem.
    • John Cho is a capable actor- not the best Spike Siegel fit. I don't think Spike Siegel is Asian, but I get it being a Japanese show.
    • Jet being Black is fine. I like Shakir. He captured that nagging / more grounded attitude against Spike quite well.
    • Faye is fine as well. Is it bad I wish she was prettier?
  • Awful color palette, everything's green-screened in this budget.. some casino tables didn't even cast shadows. Cheap 3D.
  • In anime, every episode made you feel something. This live-action is cheesy and campy
  • Live action lacks subtlety. The anime, you put together pieces of the cryptic past and the plot plays out nicely with a weight. The live-action makes all details explicit, making it lack depth.
6/10 I probably won't watch second episode.

First person who comes to mind for Spike is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's got the chill, laid-back thing going on pretty well. Dave Bautista would have been awesome as Jet haha. I just watched Red Notice & think Gal Galdot might make a pretty good Faye.

Hah, apparently there's a website for fan casting: https://www.mycast.io/stories/cowbo...ack/4078466/suggestions/dave-bautista/6474304

@Kaido I like JGL. But he's not a good Spike in my opinion. Spike in the anime is suave, mysterious, at times cold, and determined. I'm familiar with JGL's work - from his sitcom as a kid to his Nolan stuff. JGL is too 'nice guy' vibe to be a good Spike. He's too much theater boy vibe. (in my crappy opinion)

I know it's an anime, but also he's is too ugly to be Spike to be honest, LOL.

I can't think of a good Spike... John Cho was okay.

I saw Tom Holland in Devil All the Time - a serious drama. He wouldn't be bad actually. His quippy fun nature as Peter Parker would translate well here as Spike. And boy he can play a serious and fearsome character - a good fit for Spike as well.

That movie also had Robert Pattison. Ohh that movie earned my respect for him as well. I can see him pulling off Spike. But he has blue eyes and blond hair and the face structure to go with it. Spike needs to be be more ethnic or italian something.

Cancelled after few weeks. Google it.

My take-away from this is that Netflix sucks and I'll never waste a moment of my time with ANY show they make that I'm potentially interested in until its been on for multiple seasons already.

I enjoyed it. It seems most of the anger towards it was by fans of the series already. I went into it as a newborn babe and I wasn't tainted by preconceived expectations. I was hoping for a Season 2.

Buncha 'pointa elbow' fucking weabs in this thread lol. Get over yourselves.

Show was trash -- you can't mimic anime 1:1 with live action. It comes off just completely unnatural and far too campy. I love John Cho, but I feel he lacked...charisma? For the role.

Valentine (and her looks) were not the problem.
