Netflix

2 hours ago I'm watching Netflix. Come home to see "Netflix is no longer available on this device. Please visit netflix.com/compatibledevices for a list of supported devices"

So I am the only other person on the account. My smaller newer TV says I'm not apart of the household - been that way for the past 4-5 months. My dated large living room Smart TV worked up until 2 hours ago. Basically they've banned TVs that they cannot track and used legal language to get around it.

Who else is getting this issue? Even if the account holder is the only person on the account and has an older TV it would appear they are forcing people to upgrade their TVs

The older TV is a great Smart TV too, when you shut it of it actually shuts off rather than these new Smart TVs that go into some kind of sleep mode and still have active networking traffic.

I was using Fire-stick devices a while ago for Disney+ capabilities, then after we dropped that I was still able to log into Netflix via my newer Smart TV and that worked for about a year or so, then after continually getting those 'not apart of the household' messaged I stopped using the TV Netflix capability and replaced that option with a spare PC I had. I do have one of the Firesticks now being used with the older Smart TV but every-time I log into Netflix I get the notification saying that I'm not part of the household. The older TV never had Netflix Login issues, just unexpectedly not supported anymore - total bullshit

Looks like it might have something to do with DRM.

We dumped Netflix a couple of years ago due to the constant price hikes. At $7.99/month, it was a decent deal. $22.99/month for their 4K service? Not so much

On the dated living room Smart TV Netflix loads up and shows my profile and I can view my profile and the shows I've been watching but when I try to play anything the "Netflix is no longer available on this device" notification pops up and does not stream.

I am not physically in the same household. All other devices, except my dated living room Smart TV, will notify me and say I'm not in the same household the dated TV never did this and that's the only one i care about atm.

Netflix has been cracking down on "password sharing" for a while now.

I think they changed family to household to legally get around that.
Since you are sharing the account, have you logged into netflix to see who's connected? Maybe there are too many devices.

I canceled a couple years ago, but it used to show me how many connections, the locations, and IP address. The history went back years. I shared it with my MIL only.

Do you share the same internet connection?

What is a Netflix Household?

A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to sign up for their own account to watch Netflix.

You can manage who uses your account by setting a Netflix Household.

A Netflix Household is a collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix. A Netflix Household can be set using a TV device. All other devices that use your Netflix account on the same internet connection as this TV will automatically be part of your Netflix Household.

Back when they started changing the password sharing thing I had a problem with one TV. We have Google Fiber, and the TV in question is plugged into the the nest router directly. The other TVs are on WIFI. For some reason they said it wasn't a part of my network, even though they should all share the same IP address.

Anyway, when the message comes up, at the bottom of the screen is a link for help or something and I think I had to scan a QR code and screw around with an email confirmation or something. It's been fine since.

They have a specific message for when too many devices are using an account. Sounds like the OP might not be the account holder? So maybe as part of the password crackdown they told the account holder to boot other devices off, or maybe they pushed out a thing that effectively did that. In which case logout and log back in to re-authenticate the device.

Netflix is upgrading their streaming, so if its an old enough TV it might not be able to decode newer formats which might be part of it. I think Netflix might be moving to AV1.

As for tracking, I mean, they'll know what you're watching regardless so not sure what extra tracking you expect them to be doing.

Which, they flagged my account, but we actually do use 2 different ISPs (one is Cox cable and the other Verizon 5G Home internet), but since I told them it was just 2 devices in my own home they didn't do anything. But they didn't actually tell me that's why my account was flagged, they just put up a notification about security (making it sound like my account had been compromised). If they'd just mentioned the 2 ISPs I could've explained it to them, I didn't even realize that until reading an article about that being one of the things that caused the accounts to get flagged.

"I"VE BEEN DUPED!" - Estelle Costanza

I think with the dated Smart TV still working well into the Password Sharing phase I began thinking my situation was OK by them, pffff, even though something curious was going on between my older and new IoT devices.

The FireStick devices will enable the older Smart TV but not being the account holder and in a different location makes me look at is as a password sharing issue before too many devices being the issue on the account. However after inquiring my sibling and the family yesterday my in-law said they got their own Netflix while my sibling said they didn't; was told they got their own account months ago. Then the kids don't know if it's their own account, they just know they have Netflix, lol the situation, sigh.

The Jury is still out and I still wonder if we remove a few member's profiles and change the password if that will remedy things... hmm

EDIT: how do you remove devices from the account?

Jfc, I've never attached a Smart-TV to my local network directly.

Btw, I am always on a VPN shifting locations daily, never had an issue with Neflix on that account.

Check out Jellyfin. You can have all your content in one place and access it from any device, it's browser based so fairly OS agnostic. No need to worry about being screwed by policy changes or them pulling content, or raising prices etc.

We're slowly moving to a rotating our streaming service model: maybe keep one core service, and subscribe/cancel when there are other things we want to watch. Then, we never spend too much on streaming.

As for how we watch: current TV is an old, dumb 14 year old 1080p LCD. We have a Windows-based HTPC hooked up and an Xfinity Flex box. The flex thing is kind of a POS, but it was free with my Internet service, so useful for the paramount+ app or occasional free movie from Xfinity. PC handles the rest: Blu-ray, ripped movies/TV shows, Netflix app, web-based watching...

Heads up as well, Roku is turning to shit. They're getting real aggressive about monetizing ads (gonna start putting them on Home page on TVs, applied for a patent to show ads over other content), and they're pulling stuff like this:

They were already becoming more and more of a paint when setting up a device.

I'm planning on doing that, especially since they all started jacking up their prices and Netflix isn't grandfathering in any longer (had gotten grandfathered at $7.99 for years, then $9.99, and now I think its $11.99 in like the span of like 2 years; I barely ever watch it and it serves as "NCIS background noise" for other in the household; I'll probably wait til end of Stranger Things - which sucks they never sold seasons 3 and 4 on Blu-Ray just DVD).

I was able to get the Hulu $0.99/month for a year deal last year otherwise I would've given it up (actually was able to get that deal because I'd cancelled Hulu/Disney+ since they jacked up the price after letting it stay at the bundle price for about 6 months). Disney+ was a couple of extra (not sure if that's changing since they're turning into a single service?), and then got Starz for 6 months for cheap as well (wanted to watch Party Down season 3 and then watched several movies so it was worth it but don't see keeping it). Got Paramount+ free for like 3-4 months and it included Showtime. And every so often I'll get a free month of Prime and catch up on some stuff on there. Never bothered with HBO (I'm just not that into it; stopped watching Game of Thrones where I stopped in the books and never had interest in finishing either; only show I was interested in was Our Flag Means Death but its not worth bothering with the mess that it is these days, let alone their inflated pricing; might do a free trial to finish Our Flag Means Death and maybe finally watch The Wire at some point).

Still need to do the 3 months AppleTV trial too.

Most of my streaming is on Tubi (mostly as its the best for more obscure older stuff) and YouTube. Unfortunately it looks like the former has started to get popular enough (I think it might be owned by the part of Fox that Murdoch still owns too) that they might transition to a typical streaming service (i.e. subscriptions), and YouTube is clearly trying to monetize. Once my Apple Music trial is up I'll probably finally subscribe, although I'm unbundling from Google.

I'm actually starting to move to physical media for movies again, while I still can at least. Too much stuff that I can't view basically anywhere. And that's gonna get worse as physical media dies off. And a lot of stuff never even got Blu-ray releases. Guess I'll need to look into high quality upscaling/processing for DVDs or something. Or get real weird and start trading physical copies of like Despcialized Star Wars LaserDiscs.
