If you use Firefox, there is a plugin called VideoDownloadHelper that works great for saving YouTube videos to your computer, but from my experience this type of thing doesn't tend to work for things like Netflix or other similar places.

If you want high quality content you have the option to buy the media, buy the digital content, pay subscription to services like Netflix or Amazon or whatever other services like that. Most of the legal services offering TV shows/movies online are going to be streaming, not downloading, for pretty obvious reasons.

If you aren't as concerned about the legality, then torrenting it is. Since you specifically said legal ways to get the content, then yeah - you can just pay / subscribe. I don't know about getting all the good stuff for free and legally and being able to store it. Does not seem too likely!!

Why do you want to download instead of stream? Are you planning to download Netflix's entire library and cancel before the first month is over?
Perhaps his Internet connection isn't fast enough to stream HD? I hate that if I watch on Netflix, it's sometimes like watching a pirated VHS version of a movie. I would love if Netflix had some sort of "this movie will self-destruct as you watch it; but at least you can buffer enough of it ahead of time to watch the entire thing in HD."

Legal down loading is so much harder than torrents!

You can easily download movies legally, but you have to buy them individually via whatever digital movie service you prefer. If you want to pay one monthly fee to watch tv/movies, you're going to have to stream them.
