What's the deal with what/when they add to their collection?

I know TV shows sometimes go on as they're broadcast or relatively soon afterward, but some movies and some shows are only available in DVD or not available at all. Do Netflix add to their streaming collection gradually over time, or only when they sign a studio, or only when they feel like it?
 
It is up to the studios what Netflix carries for streaming, and for how long. Netflix would clearly prefer to have everything available all the time.

So are the DVD releases going to be one day for streaming, or is DVD release a separate agreement from streaming?

But you really do have a choice of two completely separate options. You can wait for the discs or not.

And, after all - It's just a show. It's not like Netflix is revolutionizing the way we communicate as a species.

Well, it kind of defeats the purpose of on-demand streaming if I have to wait for it, doesn't it?

I do hope I'm not being subversive or treasonous if I suggest that over time I might expect an improvement in overall capability of what I can get over the internet.

And, after all - It's just a show. It's not like Netflix is revolutionizing the way we communicate as a species.

I bet that's what people said about the internet when it was first introduced to the public as well.

It's $8 so I'm pretty forgiving on the selection. I also supplement with 2 discs at a time for the latest releases. Like $21 a month.
I also recently went back with Amazon prime so that's another $7 a month. So under $30 a month for entertainment with the benefits of prime shipping. Beats cable/satellite easily.
 
Netflix lost a LOT of content in that Viacom fiasco. Even the American version is getting pretty sparse. Unfortunately, it's the only streaming option we have here. I'd kill for Amazon Prime.

Don't forget Hulu for TV, and Vudu for HDX (hi def sound and video) a la carte new releases for own/rent.
