I really only have two problems with it. The recommendation system needs some work and there is just a lot of crap to look through to find something and everything is just in stereo.

5.1 audio would require alot of bandwidth. 6mbps down is pretty much what you need to get HD now.

I believe Netflix has stated that they are working on bringing 5.1 audio though.

We use it for the TV shows, mostly. We've made it through 2 seasons of Heroes and if thats the only thing I ever watch on there, I consider it worth my money. 🙂

Love it!!!
Maybe not the new releases, but selection
has improved in the past 6 months.
There are a lot of good movies I never knew of,
seen before, as well as docu and educational.
And if you like classic tv sitcoms, you have tons to
chose from.
If you think watch instant is not worth it, you're
not looking deep enough at what they offer.

Well, I've decided to give the "watch instantly" service a shot with my XBox 360.

FYI: "watch instantly" is basically streaming movies via Netflix. I do it through my XBox 360.

I have to say that a vast majority of the movies that I actually want to see are not available via "watch instantly" at Netflix. I'd say over 80% of the movies I want to see (some very popular ones) are not available to watch instantly.

That just sucks. So, I'll end the 2 week trial next week and that's that.

I'm curious if anyone out there has tried out the service and if so, what are your thoughts?

In the end, maybe I'll try again next year. Subscription based services are the future but the services are very immature right now.

Watch Instantly is basically only just beginning. They have to show that it works and works well before they can get all the licensing agreements from the movie publishers to show every single movie out there. Additionally, it will probably be a long time (if ever) before you see newly released movies on the service because the movie publishers are going to want to sell the DVDs/Blu-Rays first and then go through the PPV route (TV/consoles). You should expect new movies to hit the Watch Instantly service at about the same time it would hit the movie channels. One of Netflix's partners is Starz btw.

So long as studios, publishers, etc know that the future is going to be subscription based. They have to learn to adopt or else those that don't will go under.

They have like 8,000 titles available. Yes, they are missing many major titles because they don't have full studio support at this point, but I don't think there is anything wrong with advertising a bonus service with over 8,000 titles, especially since it is only meant to be IN ADDITION to their primary by-mail service, which is currently the best way to watch movies, period.

As they extend HD capability to other devices and sign on more titles, it will likely become the core of their business, but for now it is a 100% FREE addition to an already fantastic service. In fact, Netflix charges LESS now (even after adding Watch-It-Now) than they did when they started out.

i use netflix both with a roku box http://www.roku.com/ and now that i got xbox 360 for christmas, i got the gold live thing to use it also

i like to watch the old movies and the zombie movies you can't get anywhere else

I have Netflix anyway, and the watch instantly feature is a great free addition. Yes, the current choices are limited. However, that's not a problem for me as I've got more good stuff queued up than I'd have time to watch in a year. I like it enough that after streaming through my laptop for a while I picked up a Roku box.

I like it.. it has a ton of kids movies that my kids can watch.

Whats lame about it is that it requires a gold membership to use.. OK, i'm already paying for the netflix service, why should I have to pay for a gold live membership to use it?

thats the lame part.

I dont play xbox 360 games online, so all i use the gold membership for is to stream movies from netflix.

no thanks.

I'll just buy a $100 set top box and do it that way instead of having to pay for 2 different subscriptions.

Yeah....$50 a year. Damn.

$4.16 a month. Whoopee. Given the quality of service that Live Gold provides over its free competitors (Wii and PS3), it is worth it. You can easily find 13 month subscriptions for $40 or less. $3.08 a month.

Eh, we're talking about the movie studios here. They will fight tooth and nail to keep things the way they are because they will be afraid of change. Much like the music studios.

it all adds up.. 4.16 a month here, 9.99 there for a newsgroup subscription, 15/month for wow, etc.. its just another expense that i think should not exist as long as you own an xbox 360.

I agree whole heatedly with that point. If MSFT wants to make money, they should do some sort of profit sharing with Netflix.
