I don't subscribe to either one but I"m tempted to do blockbuster simple b/c I have a store very close to me and would like the idea of being able to get a new movie that night. However if I didn't have a blockbuster near me it would be hands down NetFlix based on the the many reviews I've read about either.

As far as your initial question. I think Netflix was in the market way earlier and therefore has name recognition. That's probably the biggest reason.

Same for me and their service is terrible around here compared to Netflix. I can't stand Blockbuster's website either. It's a mess trying to find anything, and the queuing system is terrible. Like others, my movies shipped randomly in my queue making it impossible to get multi-disc series in order. It didn't seem to matter whether it said it was available or not.

Netflix has provided me with good service, so I've no incentive to switch to anyone else. If I did switch, I likely wouldn't go to Blockbuster. BB has proven themselves a company with whom I don't want to deal. Back when I went to video stores, BB was such a PITA (huge long waits in line even if there was just two people in front of me, their system constantly lost my membership info., unfriendly workers, etc.) that I would travel further to go to a different store. Plus, I have no intention of going into a BB store again, so their B&M option is of no benefit.

Netflix has better service, I think they're faster, and I think they have more warehouses around then Blockbuster.

Just don't send too many back too quickly cause both will throttle you.

I'm gonna say Netflix FTMFW.

I get Blockbuster Movies usually 1 day after shipping.
And trading in for 3 movies rocks at the store.
I just completed the trial :D

I would stick with Blockbuster if they weren't strict about carrying unrated versions of movies. That kills it. Back to Netflix for me.

I've tried both.

After using both, I'd say Netflix>Blockbuster.
Reasons for this:
-Blockbuster has a smaller selection and sometimes I want "unpopular" things, so hurray Netflix
-Same goes with Anime selection (although you can basically download all anime) but when I want a DVD, Netflix all the way.
-Blockbuster screwed up more movies then I can count (so a lot), ever since switching back to Netflix I haven't had one movie screwed up yet.
-Both are about the same speed. And both will "throttle" you if you return too many movies too quickly in too short a period of time.
-And I'd say Netflix is just a tad faster, day at the most (faster)

I've used Netflix since before Blockbuster did online rentals... no reason to change. I thought about it when BB started their in-store returns deal, but the closest BB is 2 miles away.

people remember how customers were treated when blockbuster was king.
never mind the fact that they clearly didn't like movies, they held onto full screen long after netflix had pushed widescreen, they didn't carry unrated directors cuts when netflix did, they didn't carry wide selections of indi films when netflix did etc. no way i'd support that company. they have only changed for the better in the few ways they have only because netflix has forced them.

Last time I tried, blockbuster's online seleection was not as good as netflix's and the ability to go to their store is wholly useless since at any one time it only carries about 30 titles and anything that came out within the last 6 months is rented out by the non-internet-using peons who're under the impression that if they saw an ad for it on Fox a year back it HAS to be worth renting. But it's not. Blockbuster in stores will die and we'll all be online or renting from the little booths in grocery stores.

At the present, and in my area (Central NJ), BlockBuster has been hands down better than Netflix.

I used Netflix for two months and was getting throttled, (The first few weeks, turnaround was great, by the end of the second month I would wait 3-4 days before a movie arrives.. so annoying).

I signed up for BlockBuster that offers the same 2 movies a time for 14.99, but can return them to the store for a free rental, AND get one free coupon for a game or movie a month. Even if I use this once or twice a month, it is a benefit over Netflix.

My turnaround time for BB is like clockwork. Return two movies on Monday, the next two in the queue arrive on Wednesday.
