i spanked the shit out of wheaton during "it's academic" competitions :)

does ms. zeh still work there?

No, but Ms. Jaffe (guidance counselor) has been there literally since they opened the school, she is in her mid 90's and has retired 3 times. I think after this last year she might finally stay retired.

she may have gotten married by now. her first name is karen. she taught nsl government. she was one of my favorites... she got bounced from sherwood to wheaton.

is mrs. pomerantz still around? she was a mcps substitute teacher and relic. she worked alongside robert oppenheimer during the manhattan project.

ok, so...

this show...

is fucking awesome...

it's what 24 should have been but couldn't be because americans would have been too lazy to have kept up with the storyline.

it starts off kinda confusing with frayed ends... you aren't sure who's who and what's going on. most american households would have written it off as a show that's over their heads or too boring.

this show is fantastic.

OK, I'll have to check it out. It's been saved in my queue for many many months and I haven't touched it.

as for Luther, we just watched the first 3 episodes. This is an awesome show.

Thanks, Slayer. good rec.

John Luther is a dedicated detective trying to keep from losing his grip on his personal life in this innovative BBC police drama that spotlights the psychological factors underlying the crimes the sleuth has been assigned to solve.

idris elba is john luther

Idris Elba stars in it?

/added to queue.

finished it last night.

rather annoyed that it turns into serial/cliffhanger for the final 2 episodes, though. I expected better of BBC programming.

:colbert:

still quite good, though.

cliffhanger yeah, but I thought the last two episodes were intensely awesome

yes, they were still great. I think episodes 2 and 4 (because of the creepy dude's wife--her character, and particularly the acting from that woman was amazing) were my favorite.

I still hate cliffhangers--such a cheap device to keep viewers watching. when that's all you have, it only works on idiots.

This show [Luther] is so good on its own merit, it doesn't need that crap, which made me sad when season 1 ended that way.

I love a show like 24, but it embraces its stupidity, and it's rather well-done stupidity. I just wish shows like Luther would leave that crap for the stupid people that wouldn't watch their shows, anyway. :(

Anyhoo, I'm hoping to check out The State Within tonight.

I agree on some level. The show is very well made and acted, but the plot does get a bit crazy. Maybe they didn't mind using the cliffhanger because it's going to be a short series. I don't want to go look, in fear of spoilers, but the four episodes of season 2 may be the last of them?

Bump.

Any other recommendations along these lines?

I actually can't get into The State Within...not sure why. Maybe later.

But we absolutely love Luther, wish there was more. Just finished the excellent new Sherlock Holmes 3 episode season (quite fantastic)--hope for more soon.

So, basically, looking for similar well-written, British-type show with excellent characters, thriller/mystery/espionage on streaming.

I couldn't really get into MI6...though I might pick it up again. First 3 episodes were rather "meh"

I've had sherlock on my queue for a long time, I should really watch some.

I just looked through my queue and the closest thing I could find was Wire in the Blood. I haven't watched it yet, the long episodes scare me away most of the time

Average 3.9 stars, buest guess for me 4.3

Some other things on my queue, again that I haven't seen:

Intelligence
Sleeper Cell
Twin Peaks
Doctor Who(idk, I don't really even know what this show is about, but I know it's popular)

It gets tough to get into a new series when you are halfway through:

Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Dexter
Walking Dead

I have not even touched The Wire, True Blood and some of the other goodies out there....

/adds another log to the unlit fire.
