The Killing....but Luther is much more entertaining than both.

The Fall. Gillian Anderson instant watchability. Only seen season 2, the level of detail is very good.

The Killing is pretty good. Less star power. Much more American.

I have seen all of The Killing and the first season of The Fall. I would choose The Fall. The Fall has better acting, and better writing. Both are overrated, but The Killing is more overrated.

I need to watch Season 2 of The Fall still.

I would say the killing is good, but I haven't seen the fall yet for comparison. So both.

The Fall. Gillian Anderson kills it.

Gillian Anderson was good in The Killing but Joel Kinnaman was the reason to watch it.

The Killing was great. Except the last season which was just quite good. First two are must watch.

the killing got old. they should not have split the story line into 2 seasons imo. i enjoyed it and really liked season 1 a lot, but i was definitely sick of it by the time season 2 ended. i had no desire to watch season 3.

It was supposed to be a one-off, but they retooled the ending of the final episode into some half-baked false cliffhanger turd after the ratings were very good throughout the first season.

So, that complete horseshit of a fake ending in season 1 convinced me that there is no reason to stick around for season 2. :D

Isn't that pretty much what happened with The Fall as well? That was supposed to be a one season show too I think.

I agree, but you might want to watch the last two seasons, as they didn't have that issue. All things considered, I think the last two seasons were better than the first two primarily because they didn't drag them out.

I dunno. Only watched the first episode so far and no real desire to continue with The Fall. I think I am currently uninterested in the creepy rapist stories. maybe some time later.

Though, if it was proposed as a single season with a complete arch, then abandoned with shenanigans in the final episode, I will certainly avoid.
Is that what happened, or did they just write up a completely new storyline?

The Killing was written and filmed completely as a single season story arc, and was fantastic up until the final episode, that was retooled in the final minute to create some second season bollocks.

My understanding is that The Fall was supposed to be a single, short (three episode) deal. It ended up being so popular that they changed the ending of the last show to enable a second season. It is the same story arc, just drawn out. So, it sounds exactly like what you are describing with The Killing. I don't think they did a terrible job with it, but the show certainly was building up to a conclusion and it could easily have been ended.

that being said, I enjoyed the first season and I am also liking the second. I don't watch many BBC shows so this has a different feel to me than most of the stuff I tend to watch.

I know. That season was so incredibly well done and then those final cheap 2 minutes or whatever just come out of nowhere. It was the same kind of crazy as a "Everybody is a ghost!" reveal. :D

I need to go and watch the original Swedish or Danish mini-series that it was adapted from.

you shouldn't insult the sixth sense like that. not even close to being on the same level.

it was more along the lines of the happening or the village (ie, it was dumb as shit).

Well, I'm not insulting the Sixth Sense--because that was good. it's more of the cliche'd over-adoption after the Sixth Sense, but if every movie does that stupid turn at the end, it suddenly becomes "Everybody is a Ghost!" and for no good reason...

Of course this isn't a case of ghosts, but the forced turn in the final minutes of that season is the same type of absurd....but more absurd because the 2 characters primarily involved in that turn were never developed in that way leading up to it. It's like one dude suddenly shouts out: "Haha, I'm a Russian Spy and I was here to steal nuclear secrets all along. Psyche!" :D

"Everybody are ghosts!"--I'm mostly referencing Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation (Chris Pratt), who once claimed that he knows the ending to every movie after the first ten minutes: "Everybody is a ghost!" (which was relevant at the time of that episode.) :D
