And that's probably the main reason. If Netflix has no competition they can screw people over any way they want to. But if they have Blockbuster as a competitor, they might actually have to have better service or people will switch.

It's still a Monopoly if there's only one company that's allowed to do somethign and last I checked, Monopolies were still illegal.

Didn't Walmart have an online rental thing before too? What ever happened with that?

Walmart transferred all of their rental customers to Netflix

At the same time, if you don't sue other companies that use your patented ideas, you actually lose your patent. The other company can then apply for the same patent, obtain it, and sue you.

It's a messed up system.
