My house's monthly entertainment budget cannot include a "normal" cable package due to cost. Some of us have ditched cable (except for the Internet connection) and switched to an alternative delivery method for much less $$/month.

Comcast equivalent to what I have ~ $150/month without phone. With a whole lot of shit I'll never watch or miss.

I pay $65 to Comcast, $15 to Netflix (dropping to $8 at the end of the month).

So, yea, some of us ARE that hard up. Not to mention the fact I can watch when I want, commercial free, and I've been very happy with the selection so far. Lots of stuff for the kiddos, enough for wife and I to not complain most of the time.

Don't get me wrong, I love streaming, use it all the time. But with a nice high def tv and audio system, I want the best picture and sound I can get, which is blu ray.

If there is ever a time when I can stream that quality, I'll no longer need the discs.

I don't blame Netflix for the crap that's been coming our way. I do think that they could have handled the situation better but it's not their fault that the movie industry is looking to kill them off by required that they pay crazy amounts of money for streaming and DVD rights.

I'll stick with them until it gets really ridiculous. I've had streaming since I started and there's still a whole bunch of content out there for me to watch.

I don't think you can compare steam and netflix. You aren't losing anything if games were to go digital only.

Heres a comparison, I can get Thor on Blu ray in 1080p or stream it and it be in standard definition. I would be pissed if the only way to watch it were in standard definition.

When you use a digital medium to get a game, you're not losing anything. Would you still use steam if all the games were 800x600 resolution with the graphics at low? Probably not.

That's the biggest problem right now, there's not a legitimate alternative. Amazon isn't really close to being able to compete with netflix in terms of catalog size.

Isn't blockbuster's streaming service up now? I think it requires purchasing a box though.

Eventually all this BS will leave enough bad taste in the mouth that people will say screw it and just pirate. Current illegal streaming alternatives are so much better than Netflix and Amazon right now. Megaupload is making crazy money for a reason and will only get bigger.

All the more reason to cancel.

I don't get why people are throwing their arms up and wanting to end their service. The only thing that is changing here is where you go to update your queue, and they are ADDING video games. They improved what they have RIGHT NOW and yet people are mad? What the hell??????

I for one welcome our new mail-order overlords.

This. I feel like it's a waste to stream new content when I spent so much on my home theater setup.

I like having the physical disc with inserts/artwork/etc, so I have a large DVD and Blu-ray collection. I will continue to buy DVDs (secondhand; older movies) and Blu-rays (new releases) until they are no longer available.

I intend to keep my Netflix streaming sub for much much longer. Not sure why people are bitching about Netflix so much, their anger needs to be directed at the publishers and studios demanding obscene licensing fees.

I hope they realize that if they succeed in killing Netflix, people are going to go right back to the illegal methods. So instead of making money with Netflix, they'll be spending billions on lawyers.

Actually, there is a service that does just that, OnLive. How successful it's been, I don't know, haven't been following.

I think you are underestimating how much of a drop in quality people are willing to suffer.

If people can get 60-70% of the quality without having to get their fat asses off the couch to put a BluRay in, they'll use streaming. Same thing that happened with 128kb MP3s will happen to movies. Vast majority of people don't care that much, and BluRay will be for cinephiles.

i got the same email a couple hours ago.

i suspect that the only people who got the email were those who canceled their mail service and stuck with just the streaming, since most of you who said you were cancelling after reading the op never got the email. i canceled the mail dvd service about a week ago and i got the email.

I got the email and i dropped streaming and dropped from 3 blu-rays to 2.

No fucking shit but they got to start somewhere but it is only 8 bucks so still worth it to me.

They "started" years ago and haven't moved much. By this point in time, we expect more and all they continue to do is add shitty old tv shows people watched 10-15 yrs ago.

At this point in time I should be able to stream Thor (it came out almost a half a year ago), and other movies that are no longer in theaters that came out this year through netflix for my 8-10 bucks a month fee.

why should you be able to? go see how much the movies cost to rent on demand. you'd be lucky to get 2 new movies for the monthly cost of netflix. the service is what it is. it's a great value.

Because its a half a year old movie, thats why.

I know how much they cost and its overpriced which is why I have netflix.

the service is what it is.
What a useless statement.

it's a great value.
Speaking on the TV side of things, paying for something thats already been broadcast on TV is not a great value. Every once in awhile I'll catch a series I might want to watch, but we keep it for my wife's shows. Why she feels the need to rewatch TV series she saw years ago is beyond me but she does. Once movies that have been out recently start showing up, then it will be a great value.

omg you figured it out! a service where we can stream new movies for a low monthly fee! you're a genius! start working on the idea ASAP, it's a billion dollar idea, I can feel it! can't miss!!!~~!
