Netflix on Android

I read something about a possible hardware requirement to get netflix on android. I was going to get the Incredible 2 when it releases and I was wondering if it had the necessary requirements for it to get netflix when it does get released.

There was a rumor a while ago that to watch anything you'd have to have a newer Qualcomm processor in your phone but I don't know if that will be true or not.

Netflix's board has Microsoft shills on it, but IIRC, they were hiring Android developers a while back.

What they really need to do is toss Silverlight and switch to HTML5.

I think the incredible 2 is going to use the MSM8655 snapdragon which is supposed to support netflix but who knows if netflix will release something for it.

The LG Revolution uses the MSM8655 and comes with the netflix app. I think the thunderbolt also uses the MSM8655. I am not sure the if the netflix app works on the thunderbolt, if it doesn't, you will probably need to wait for netflix to announce official support for other MSM8655 phones.

Not sure what the reference to microsoft is implying, but AFAIK, the reason netflix isn't on android is strictly because the hardware/software doesn't support a protected audio/video path which the newer MSM8655 qualcomm chips are supposed to support.

I have the HD2 running Android. Netflix video streaming was working fine via the leaked netflix app on my phone for a 4-5 hour window 3 weeks weeks ago, I am guessing netflix was testing but afterwards they disabled streaming. During the brief time streaming worked, Droid and other non Qualcomm users reported a DRM error. As for the Microsoft remark, I have to add that there there seems to be some unnecessary friction on the Android platform in regards to netflix streaming.

I have an LG Revolution, and I can confirm that Netflix is a preload on this device. The latest pre-release firmware improved streaming considerably--it supports HD streams over 4G and WiFi, and SD streams over 3G.

I can also confirm that it works with the HDMI-out on the phone...unfortunately for some reason the video gets "compressed" and is output as 4:3 rather than native 16:9. I'm hoping this will be fixed before release.

There was rumor that Netflix would be tied to Qualcomm CPUs, but I think this has been proven false based on the fact that the leaked Netflix app has been working on several different OLDER phone models.

The leaked apk is still hosted on few servers. I no longer have streaming but queue works fine.

so it sounds like if the app is released it should be ok on the incredible 2.
