Netflix - now with Profiles

Remember Thanksgiving? Your family was all in the living room, then you turned on the TV, logged on to Netflix and BAM! Sacred Flesh, and Female Vampire were just there, trolling you prominently on the "Recently Watched" row?

Well, fear no more.

Presenting Netflix, now with Profiles. http://gizmodo.com/netflix-user-profiles-are-finally-here-this-is-how-the-988121697

So freaking :awe:

No passwords? Does anyone in Netflix understand the basics of profiles?
I'm pretty sure they do, but that's just an unnecessary layer of not needed security. I mean, unless someone was really curious about what you watched on Netflix, what would they really see? Not like they stream Debbie Does Dallas - Again on Netflix.

Now there's a business idea. Pornflix... :hmm:

I was going to post this earlier but they haven't rolled my account out yet, so fvckem. I'm looking forward to it tho, it's been asinine for them to take this long.

If you can't see it yet, you can create new profiles at this link if you're already logged in.

Thanks. This didn't come up for me but I clicked on that link just now and it must have triggered it.

It looks like it's generating a new profile for the additional profiles (asked for your preferences, etc). I wonder if I (the main profile) can start over too, cleaning up all the years of mash-up stuff generated by our whole family watching from the same account.

i'm in the same boat...i'm hoping it will get restarted as well.

Pretty awesome. Doesn't appear they've updated the iOS or Android apps to support this yet. Hopefully soon. My wife only watches on her Kindle Fire.

Might want to go back to the post you wrote to start this thread as an example of what someone might see. The only reason to have profiles is to separate what you are watching from other people with access to the same account. Without the option to password protect the profile, for many people, the feature will be useless.

Of course, if you are Netflix, and plan on adding advertising to the service, this would be the first step and making the advertising much more targeted.

It's not about porn. Say you have kids and you want to limit what they have access to. They have their own account that can watch a set rating level for instance, and the parents' account with full access has a pin so the kids don't just go to that account and watch whatever.

The fact that it took them this long to come out with profiles says a lot about the guys who are in charge of the UI. And it's not just that, for example I still can't see only new movies, instead I have to wade through the million TV shows as well. There's some very basic UI rules that they seem to ignore.

Netflix's main reasons for separating profiles is (apparently) for the purpose of instant queues and recommendations. Not security.

I'll have to agree. For a lot of people, this is not yet what they wanted when they talked about 'profiles'. But also for a lot of people, this is pretty much all they wanted. Separate queues and recommendations.

This feature definitely has a lot more to improve upon, but at least now the framework is there and they can build on it. I really don't think they expected to create a full blown profile management when they were talking about 'profiles'. And I'm actually glad that they decided to come up with this simple profile switching. If we had to wait until everyone expectations of 'profiles' are met until they released it, we probably will have to wait for two more years until it happens.

I'm pretty sure when I have kids, I'd be a more responsible parent than letting Netflix raise my kids.

lol so they took it away and now bring it back? yaahhh!

They absolutely never released this feature for the public before. If you've seen it before you must be in some beta-channel and got a sneak-peek of this feature.

I don't want their recommendations, and I sure don't want to have to wade through all of the "because you watched" nonsense, in order to get to the new releases.

I do want an option to turn that garbage off.

I don't get what you mean by "letting Netflix raise my kids". I don't have kids, but I have a little sister and the other day she was asking why I liked House of Cards, said she watched a little bit of it but got bored and turned it off. Why did she check it out? Cause it was there on the recently watched list. I don't think House of Cards is appropriate material for her, so having a way to keep that stuff from showing up for her is needed. I immediately noticed the lack of profiles the very first time I tried Netflix, it's such an obvious requirement I truly wonder how Netflix's QA missed it.

In my particular case I don't need a password cause I'm not worried about my kid sister actively trying to watch R rated stuff, but it would provide that extra peace of mind knowing that kind of stuff won't show up for them at all, even if they accidentally go to the wrong profile or what have you.

I agree with cronos that at least they gave us basic profiles now and can add improvements to it as time goes by. What they need now is a password/pin option as well as content restriction settings.

Oh, and a simple option to sort between movies or TV shows and not have genre be the only filtering method!
