Netflix/360 question

What is the duration of the trial Netflix subscription? I'd like to check out the streaming service, but don't want to activate it if it's for a day or two. I'd like to maximize my time with the trial in order to see if it'd be beneficial to open an account with them. I don't see it listed on their site or the Microsoft/Netflix partnership site.

u may want to look at the selection, i went into the trial having high hopes, but the selection is not the greatest. but it could be worse

I agree.. the selection isn't great, but at 8.99 a month it seems worth it to me just to have it.

My gripe is the HD and SD video's don't have 5.1 audio. I'm not audiophile, but I like to have at least 5.1 audio even if it is downsampled even more so than regular AC3 feeds.

Wow, really? Does your A/V receiver have DPLIIx? Does that sound fine?

Well, you're not getting just the streaming for $8.99 but the DVDs too. I switched over from Blockbuster and the DVDs for new movies plus the streaming selection makes this a great value IMHO.

I've definitely been getting my money's worth by getting 1 DVD per week plus all of the streaming I have been doing, even if it's just to watch episodes of The Office for the third time.

I'd really like to switch due to the streaming, but it's so hard giving up the Blockbuster deal. I have a store just down the street. It's so nice to turn in a movie mailer, have them check it back into the system and leave with a free rental.

The streaming sucks. Do not switch to Netflix for it. Their selection of DVDs is just fine, but their streaming selection is just a bunch of B-movies from the 80s and 90s. I'd much rather have Blockbuster's thing where you can exchange a movie in the store for free a couple times a month, but I don't watch enough movies for it to be worth it at $12/mo. Even $9/mo for Netflix is a bit higher than is worth it for me.

You mean like Ratatouille, No Country for Old Men, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Heroes: Season 3 (new episodes available the day after they air), Apocalypto, Wild Hogs, Boondock Saints, Pan's Labyrinth, etc. ?

They certainly don't have tons of new releases, but with the recent Starz Play deal they actually have a lot of recent and popular titles.

I have three Blockbusters on my way to work. When they switched me from Unlimited Exchanges to 5 Exchanges per month, I simply would alternate between the three stores to maximize my exchanges. They recently updated their system so that the exchanges are tied to your account. So I just went from up to 15 exchanges per month down to 5. This was after being downgraded from unlimited exchanges to 5 and no exchanges for games.

Blockbuster's rate for 3 out at a time is also $3 more a month than Netflix.

The continuous dropping of services by Blockbuster and the adding of services by Netflix also heavily factored into my decision.

I'm not sure what DPLIIx is, but I guess Dolby Pro Logic. My receiver is taking what I assume is their 2 channel mix and doing a matrix to my center, sub, and rear speakers. It sounds ok, but nothing is distinct.

I'm not using high end stuff by any means... It's a HTIB from 2002 or so that can do 5.1 DD and DTS. I hope one day to get a 7.1 receiver when I go Blu-Ray.

And to me the 8.99 is worth it if I can get a few movies a month by mail as well as the streaming portion. Team America and Jackass 2.5 kept me entertained yesterday. I watched the Cocaine Cowboy's HD feed and it was just a crazy story about the coke scene in the 80's.

That's why I kick my wife's and friend's collective ass at Scene-It. 😛

I imagine you have it for the 360... that is a great game for when friends are over... even better than the Wii IMO.

I know that there are a fair number of movies in their streaming that are actually worth watching, but I'm just going on personal experience that every time I've tried to find something worth seeing with people by looking at their streaming, I've always been disappointed. They seem to have a good number of movies, but a large number of them are crap.

I finally reenacted my netflix today to check this out and I would agree that most are crap, but if you walk into any museum--er, I mean brick and mortar movie store, you'll see the same, most are total garbage.

At least for now, I think this is pretty cool, though. There are some gems among the refuse, and especially for the kids' genre it seems to be fairly heavy on the material, if that's of value. Having Heroes 2 and 3 in HD is good. I have 3 of the 4 bars which I'd say gives quality equal to a decent divxed movie.

I've found a fair amount of things that I'd like to watch but I know what you mean. Hopefully they will continue to expand. Starz Play was huge because before that there was almost nothing even remotely worth watching. Now there's at least some mainstream rubbish as well. 😛

Since trying this netflix thing out on my 360 since the beginning of December I can only say it is fan-freaking-tastic. My wife and I cranked through two seasons of Heroes and both seasons of jeremiah, plus some other stuff--at least 50 hours of content. Quality is pretty good for SD and better for HD (I once had 4 bars HD. It wasn't DVD but it was very good). I run into a "your internet connection has slowed" message once every several hours (probably every 8-10 hours) and it briefly resyncs with a lower quality (not that I can actually notice).

The service just works, and damn well. One evening we ran into what appeared to be a problem on netflix's side. Delivery was too slow to use, but if it was Netflix, it only happened once.

My internet provider is going to hate me.

Yep. I cancelled it within a few days...absolutely nothing worth watching, except for Heroes.

I just signed up yesterday, and was also disappointed with the selection. I'm also trying to get over the fact that Blu-ray rental was another buck a month.
