netbooks are dead

What do you use that nettop setup for Zap? An idea I've been playing with for awhile is to have a beefy desktop, with a nettop piggybacked onto it for light duty stuff(75% of my workload). Put the desktop to sleep when I don't need power, and run the nettop for pedestrian activities. That should save a fair amount of power in the warm months, and reduce wear of expensive system.

Heh, it sits in my kitchen, ready to pull up recipes if I need one. 😳

You know I thought about using a KVM with dual systems since often I don't need that much performance. The problem is that I'm using a 30" 2560x1600 monitor and most KVMs don't support that resolution.

One alternative for you (and me, in the future) is to just upgrade, using certain efficient parts. For instance I was bench testing my wife's upgrade. It is an overclocked Core i5 2500K with a GTX 470 and 4GB RAM. I tested it with an SSD. It idled around 62W or so. That was a serious eye opener! I knew the CPUs were efficient, but I didn't know the new graphics cards were so efficient at idle. The CPU was overclocked while retaining all the power saving features such as EIST. When idle (or web browsing) the CPU runs at 1.6GHz and a touch under 1v.

The 1005HA has a hard disk, and I'm always worrying when I bump it against something or whatever.

Notebook HDDs are extremely sturdy compared to desktop HDDs.

Very likely, but you have to remember I'm not in the US, we don't get the sweet deals you do.

DOH!

does it have a matte screen?

The Hannspree screen was glossy. 🙁 Heck, EVERYTHING on it was glossy, down to the touchpad. Seriously every time a glossy touchpad is made, God kills a kitten.

Performance-wise, is the Zacate more comparable to an Atom or to Intel CULV CPUs?

A little of both, though I think more like a CULV. Since the architecture is different, some things will feel like an Atom and some quite a bit better. This thread has a few review links of HP's 11.6" Zacate notebook.

"Extremely sturdy" is not how I'd describe them. I'd rather say they're less delicate. Sturdy is not an adjective that belongs to hard drives - as the countless media players with dead drives sold "for parts" on eBay can attest.

Glossy touchpads are a minor problem compared to glossy displays...

Netbooks aren't supposed to be fast. You're not supposed to game, encode video, or do 3d modeling. You use them to surf the web, watch non HD video, and work on office documents; all for a low price, and easy portability. I love my Eee900. It has a 900mhz Celeron, and does everything I want it to do. I gave my laptop to my mother, and I doubt I'll ever own another one. I have a desktop for heavy work, and the netbook works for everything else. When it dies, I'll get another one.

+2

i love my 1005hab. if it had a faster processor, a 1" bigger screen, and good graphics it would be perfect. thats why the zacates are awesome.

I've used the typical Acer 10" netbook, and it's a terrible experience.

I've got an HP Mini 311 w/ 2GB of RAM and a 40GB SSD running XP and I love it for travelling. It's fast enough that I could tank level 80 heroics in WoW with no problems. I also waited around for good deals, so I've got less than $350 in it.
